Well, this is rather unexpected.

So, I threw some orange hab seeds I'd saved from some store-bought peppers into the coffee filter/baggie deal at 7:10pm tonight. Set them on one of my computer monitors that dosen't go to sleep and thus is warm.

Thought ok.... I'm just goofing around until my real fun seeds come from HippySeedCo.

Just checked it a few minutes ago..and HOLY FRELL...it's sprouting already!!!

Dang...

Nothing special, just tap water, coffee filter, and a baggie.

Now if only the nagas go like that...

Fortunatly, I just finished concocting my grow area..I'll post pics and stuff once things get organized.

I now use a germination table in our comercial greenhouse as alot if not all seeds will germinate real fast with a little heat .
my peppers all got there start in a jiffy seed starting table and i will never go without it again.

Yeah, I was surprised because some other seeds I'd messed with haven't yet and probably won't. But, these ones sure have.

SO, as of about 12:20am, I've officially planted my first peppers ever. And they are Habaneros..it's a sign..LOL :D

Just checked in my franken-grow contraption and it's right about 87 degrees even without the heating pad, Should be spiffy.

w00t.

Well, I'm celebrating now.

Popped open the bottle of Black Velvet and currently chilling by the warm purple glow of my lights. :)

Skol!

Nice. That 87 degrees should speed things up a lot. That seems just right for Nagas and habaneros. The chinese types go a lot faster with some heat. Four hours is crazy fast for those habaneros. Mine came up from the dirt in 5 days with it heated and I thought that was fast. I don't know how long nagas take. I have some bhut jolokias but they have only been planted for 3 days and there is no sign of them above the dirt yet.

It has happened to me a couple of times now, some seeds germinated overnight or the day after. Different varieties every time, so I can't say what made them crawl out of their shell so fast. It's very pleasing though!

I think Omri or someone posted a 2hr sprout time, so I doubt i'm the fastest..but dang.. :)

And from grocery store hab seeds no less. The jalapenos and serranos havent budged yet after a week.

Here's a teaser pic of my FrankenGrow with the cups I planted of those robust 'lil habs. I choose the 3 strongest, and planted 'em.

Why only 3? Orange habs grow like weeds, and I don't want to not have room for my nagas in the HeavyMetalTunnel. :)

Yes, that is a street sign..I figure, gotta be nice reflective, eh?

Using 80W of EcoLux..works pretty well. Bulbs good for about 5 years too.

Thansk to you'all, I researched for two months before spending about $40 on all this..it's good so far. :)

Well, at the moment, there's no leaves..it's a incubater.

The ends are open to air, and the foil keeps in the heat..it's about 87 degrees solid in there.

As shoots come out, I can adjust. It's also on a window that gets at least 8hrs of sun a day.

Adding fans on the ends is a simple thing if needed. I guess ya never grew weed much eh?

You have better plans for a 1BR apt. and no budget?

I'm hardly the only peep to use foil for reflectivity and heat retention. I don't control my heating, so it's radiators in a building built in 1910 that is literally falling apart. Plus i'm on SSI..fancy shit ain't gonna happen.

Plus, I'd hate to have a purple glow at all hours out the 3rd floor..I WOULD have cops here in a day or two that way in this neighborhood.

I thought ya'll would be happy for me.

Foil works just fine. There are better materials, but I've used foil for years. It's inexpensive and I can recycle it easily when the plants go outside.

Wasnt having a shot, but foil doesnt do peppers to much good. It will make them leggy, and spindly..

No, lack of light and light that isn't close enough does that. I have that.

Foil, like any reflective only conserves and focuses light and heat. Which I need right now.

Besides, this is setup to nurture those seedlings..once they pop, so will the foil. Do you disagree that the temps or light is off for seedlings?

That is the simplicity of my plan..it cna both serve as hothouse for seedlings and open up to be whatever I need later on. I have 8' ceilings to hang the light from when the plants get tall enough. By then, it'll be summer..and it's damn hot and bright in this apt. in summer.

Ty, but I think i'll be fine.

I'm new to peppers, but not new to gardening. Anyone reember Mother Earth News? ;)

Thx Pam, 'preciate it. :)

True, but on my budget, I don't have lots of options. ;)

It is pretty damn bright in my 'tunnel' though.

Those bulbs are not normal flouros, they are full-sprectrum 40W each, so light wont be a problem for me for some time yet. I found 400w metal halides fro $45/ea tho for the future from a local surplus yard if I need them..teehee.

Mainly, it's for heat retetion for the seedlings. Light isn't my worry, it's heat. I don't control my temp in this apt as it's ancient radiators. It cna be 85 at 7pm, and 50 at 4am as the heat comes on about 3 times a day. SO, I have to create my own ecosystem.

So far, so good.

I think your best bet would be bottom heating with a cheap heating pad if it fits in your budget.

You're right, but I screwed up and bought a pad that only afterwards discovered has an auto-off after 60mins..argh. Wasn't listed on the outside of the package..grr.

Oh wel, I cna return it.

And, so far, the lights and the insulation are working well.

Steady 84-89 degrees.

I know folks are gona gnash on me, but i'm gonna show ya cna grow with just about nothing. :D
