So ... I'm back ...

So my girl apparently needed some chilli sauce yesterday ... and she asked me if I still had some chilli powder left (that was sent from Junglerain). I tasted a bit of the Naga Powder, after not having anything for months and yeah, it was hot, she came up tasted some as well and went a bit crazy. I remember why I fell in love with the superhots in the first place.

Some of you may have seen my last thread back in October, it was about 99% swearing so it disappeared pretty fast, for the third year in a row I lost about $500 worth of stock, combined from Chilliseeds.uk, THSC and Nova. So if you figure that is about $1500 in lost stock + about $3000 I spent setting up the hydroponics, growing areas etc, it added up really fast.

This time was my fault, it was a cool 20*C day, I thought I would start to harden off the plants, I put them in the sun for about 2 hours came back home and they were cooked. The previous times were fungal infections, damping off, things out of my control. This time I had the seedlings raised by a hortacultralist - under lights in a warm room, and had near full germination rates. I used all new equipment, that had been bleached, grew them all in a sterile environment, I thought I did everything right.

So, I needed a break from this forum, from the community in general ... I have spoken to members before about loosing all your plants ... its hard ... but happening three years in a row, I really had enough.

After it happened in the 2009/2010 summer Neil @ THSC really looked after me, I cannot say this enough. As well as other forum members, but I am just bloody tired now.

I collected through trades, gifts, payment - a huge collection of superhots, Douglahs, Brain Strain (which were my babies), Barrackpores etc, that are not available at the commercial sites. It was my pride and joy, and to loose the stock, it just messes with your head.

I probably would like to grow again for the next season, but right now I have no motivation, I am just completely drained ... I feel tired.

That being said I am gonna head down and see Wildfire and pick up two naga plants. So at least the season isn't a complete waste :)

How long can you keep fighting god before you give up? It seems he has an unfair advantage :P

Taj, I can sense the frustration in your post.

But don't give up mate.

You can still salvage something from this year with those Naga plants.

And try to make the most of this opportunity that just went south for you...it is a great chance to understand and remedy what went wrong.

Each mistake is an opportunity to learn.

Maybe next year you can start with a smaller number of plants, and once you can successfully get those through a growing season, you can expand the following year.

Each and everyone of us here, had to start somewhere.

And each one of us either have or still will make mistakes along the way.

But if we learn from those mistakes, that is where we gain our experience from.

I wish you the very best of luck with those two Nagas, and much better luck next growing season as well to ya!

Hey Taj,
Have a look around sometime and you will find that you are not the only one with growing troubles. I havn't had a decent harvest in about 3 years too, but also realise that we are trying to grow a variety(Chinenses) that does not grow as easy as many others. Just got to persist and don't give up. Also noticed that alot(not all) of good growers over in America had a BAD time of it last season with unusual weather etc too.

Growing Cayennes, Paprika, Birdeyes etc seem to grow great over here but the Chinenses are definately a different story.
Keep up the persistance and hopefully one day you will have a bumper crop and can tell everone about it :)
Heaps of money spent over the last 10 years of growing, but hey it's a hobby and love it! Specially when we get blessed by the Pepper gods and have a bumper season

Hey i've got a heap of leftover seed, most open pollenated. If you are keen to try again let me know and will hook you up for next season(probably a bit lat now).

Welcome back, mate!

At least to some degree, I know the frustration you speak of. Last season was a complete and utter disaster for me and while the current one has been better, it has still been a very bumpy one due to the weather here bouncing from one extreme to the other. And recently, just as my plants started bouncing back, I end up with a bad mite infestation which I haven't been able to treat yet due to the past week being one of the busiest weeks of my life.

Next year I am keeping everything under shade cloth, I would rather have plants with reduce yields than no plants at all.

It might just be my eyes, but it seems its getting brighter and hotter every summer ... sucks to be at the forefront of global warming.

Hopefully I will do a big grow, I am not really wanting to scale back ... I have the land, I have the water so I don't see any difference in killing 1 plant and killing 500 :)

I am gonna have to start again in regards to my rare superhots ... the usuals - Bhuts and Scorps I can buy off Neil, but my Brain Strains, Barrackpores, Douglahs etc ... all gone ...

So I might take you up that offer Micca, we should catch up when Dave comes back, are you still making Jerky? If so I'll buy some for the girl, I got her hooked on it but we can never find anything hot enough.

I was thinking mate, if you have any plants at the end of the season that you are going to kill - superhots - then throw them my way and I will over winter them. That is actually one thing I am really good at, not sure if it is my location or what, but I have a 3 year old Bhut + Scotch Bonnet (Finishing its 3rd Summer), not that the Bhut ever gave me more than 1 fruit ... but its alive and happy - the bonnet is going crazy in fruit.

On a seperate note, I picked up my Bhut, Morich and 7Pod plants today off Candice :) I am kinda a happy camper, a bit disappointed in myself that I wasn't in a better mood when I saw Candice, it kinda bought back all the bad memories of loosing my plants ... I am still upset about that.

I haven't been doing any Jerky for a little while, it has been soo busy. I have brought some meat though and might do a batch again soon.
With the Superhots I tend to overwinter all of them and do not like to "kill" any of them. I will sacrifice an ordinary anuumn or baccatum and any diseased ones though.I'll have a look through and see what I have got spare.

Hey did you say you are not using shade cloth? Over here in our summers we definately need shade cloth and even then the sun can be too much.
I think this has also got something to do with pods not forming. They drop their flowers/new fruit at 40 Deg.C heat. Definately know what you mean about not getting fruit. Grew a Butch.t Scorpion a few years back and got a handfull of pods and was growing it for around 4 years!
