My son has been pestering me to grow some Bhuts this year, as apparently people are asking him if he knows where anyone can buy them. I've always sown the super hots on December 26 - this year is no different.
I'm trying three different media: potting mix in a Speedling tray, Bio-Dome inserts and Oasis Horticubes. Sowed 20 in the Speedling tray and 10 each in the others. This accomplishes two goals - be able to have ripe peppers in August and see how the different media work before getting into serious sowing in early and mid-March.
The horse that I'm hoping wins is the Horticubes. I sowed 18 tomato seeds in them and 16 have germinated. I have to almost keep them in water (the cubes have to watered every day) so they are a bit leggy at this point, but I think I can deal with that by growing them in a cool greenhouse this spring. But the reason for liking them - I can start 4,000 plants for about $90. The Speedling trays would cost about $300. I can always go the nursery tray route, 60-cell ones, but that's a lot more work!
