Surprise at the super market

Stopped at the local Giant Eagle (super market) for my weekly orange habs, since that seems to be about the hottest available pepper around here. From a distance I see that there are none. Walking up to the pepper bins, I see red peppers in their place. Thinking that they are cherry peppers I look more closely and see that they are red habs and what looked like red scotch bonnets!!!!! Took a bag home and quartered a red hab to eat with dinner...The skin was much thicker than the orange hab, wasn't waxy, had a much sweeter taste and had much more heat to it. This morning, I cut up one of the "scotch bonnets" with my eggs and it was very similar to the red hab in that it had a somewhat thick skin, sweeter flavor but was even hotter than the red hab. I'm not sure where their buyer obtained these, but I'm one happy camper!!
Anyone else come across any nice surprises, while grocery/pepper shopping?

Finding scotch bonnets in bulk bins is pretty cool! A couple months ago, I got chocolate habs at Price Chopper (good sized supermarket about the same size as Giant Eagle) for only about 2.99 or 3.99 per pound. I was real happy with that find. Being that I'm in a fairly rural area up north, I usually don't have access to anything more than anaheim, poblano, jalapeno, serrano and sometimes orange habs, so it's nice to find a surprise sometimes!

It sure is! I just hope that it's a more long term availability! Did you keep the seeds from any of the chocolate habs?

I'm not sure about Giant Eagle, but I've found that the supplier of habaneros at Price Chopper changes quite frequently. I've bought habaneros there about 5 times over the past 4 or 5 months and came across 4 different varieties.

I did keep the seeds from the chocolate habs. I'm going to grow a couple plants from them this year.

Just this morning I found manzano C. pubescens at $3.99/lb at one of the carnicerias in downtown San Juan Capistrano. I bought one and saved some seeds. It tasted a lot like the rocotos my sister grew a couple of years ago.

I've not seen a change at Giant Eagle since I've been going there (about a year)...Maybe douglahs this spring? lol....I'm keeping seeds too.

Nice, Jeff!!

I've been to the mexican stores and found a styrofoam plate with habs, manzanos and a few other peppers all wrapped in one. At the time I didn't know much about peppers but grabbed them anyway.

I have found YELLOW JAMAICAN SCOTCH BONNETS at the quakertown farmers market which is only a few mile from my house i have also seen Chocolate and Red Carribean Habs at the ALLENTOWN FARMERS MARKET now and again
those yellow jamaican s.b.'s where wonderful!

Those sound like Caribbean Red Habs to me. Similar looking to Cherry Bombs at a glance, although some do have more tapered shapes, and thicker skin with a sweeter flavor. Great find, man!

They are two very different peppers that I picked up. The red hab was easier to recognize but the other is a bit flatter, almost looking like a miniature red bell pepper. I compared it to pics of some red scotch bonnets online and it looks identical...I'll try to post a pic or two..
