The Garden Assassin

I found a strange bug on one of my plants yesterday. I almost killed it but instead I trapped it and sent a picture of it to my buddy who is an entomolgist. He said it was an Assasin bug and it actually kills stink bugs( i was told nothing eats nor kills them). Now I have had so many stink bugs I can see why he was in my garden. If you see one of these, clone it and send more my way. Just wanted to share. Here it be! It was raining so the pics are not the best. Here is my new bestfriend!

oh my, I found a couple of those in my garden yesterday and was wondering what they were! Thanks a bunch, will avoid squishing them now! :woohoo:

I have a lot of them. I had mostly nymphs early on but I'm seeing mostly adults now.
I hope you mean allot of Assassins not stink bugs  But i know you meant stinkers!

They have been poking holes in my red habs and the really like my Datils for some strange reason. Oh and of course my stupid maters!

Yeah, I meant assassin bugs. Mostly wheel bugs but I've seen a few zelus luridus assassin bugs too. Fortunately I've only seen one green stink bug and one brown one.

And who doesn't like datils?

Good to know, Jamie. Thanks for the tip. If I find any I'll definitely round 'em up for you. Hmmm, I wonder if you can order these online like you can with Lady bugs.

I had one of this bugs in my mini greenhouse last season.

There was nothing there to assassin so after a couple of days I released him from from service and sent him on its way.

A quick Google search did not locate anywhere to readily purchase Assassin bugs. However, I did find a book on captive propagation of them.

#*@$ that!

Just don't try to handle them. They actually carry a venom and can penetrate human skin. The venom is supposed to cause a nasty welt, and has been characterized (as per Wikipedia) as one of the most painful insect bites. Fortunately, they aren't "wasp" aggressive(toward humans), and are slow when not attacking, but I wouldn't start fondling any, especially the larger Wheel Bugs.

Very Interesting. I touched it just enough to put in a ziploc for diagnosis. Glad he didn't bite me! Thank you
