The humane thing to do...

We had to do something this week that no one wants ever to have to do, decide when a pet that is suffering should be put down.
It was a hard decision, our six year old Siamese female cat, Luna, suddenly stopped eating, and drinking. A trip to the Vet showed
late stage kidney failure. She had little telltale signs, and went downhill fast in two or three days. Even today as we drove her to the
vet for the last time, to look at her you would swear little was wrong, but her high pitched meow let us know that in fact she was in distress.

For the benefit of those who have sealpoint Siamese cats, have then checked once they reach around five years old for signs of kidney
distress, it is common for this breed to have them, and had we known this would have screened her each year for the past five years.
Loss of kidney function is a gradual process, and until 70% of the kidneys stop working it is hard to tell if anything is wrong. If this warning
saves a single cat, then it was time well spent. As you can see from this picture she is a beauty and that is how I will remember my buddy.

Rhody... sniff...

She's a beauty. Sorry for your loss. I've been through it, and it's tough. Just remember you gave her a good life and helped her when she needed it.

Ive Never Had to Deal with Much of House Pets but lost 2 Family Pet Ducks, and I Must Say its Hard to See them Go, As they Are Part of the Family That Part of You Goes with them, Sorry To Hear That but Now They May Rest In Peace.

Sorry to hear, mate. That is very sad. :(

A couple years ago, we had to put down our 15 year old family cat. I'm not ashamed to admit, as I handed her over to the vet, I bawled my eyes out. She was part of the family and had been there half my life.

Pets are so easy to get attached to, and the hurt from losing your friend--and a member of the family--stings deep.

My condolences.

Sorry to hear about that friend.
It's almost been a year since I had to put Chris(the cat)Sabo (a Reds players) down, a friend and family member for 19 years, even though he didn't like me drying peppers in the house. All we can do is lov'em and treat them with respect like they deserve and hope for the best.
I can't read the following without thinking of my families furry lil friends of days gone by and not shedding a tear, guess I'm just a old softy.

[size="+1"]Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks OhioHeat,

That is comforting, she is buried next to a beautiful rhododendron bush in the backyard, and I made sure animals will not dig her up.
So hard to believe, the rainbow bridge brought tears. Thanks to everyone for their concern and kind words...

Anyone who's gone through that knows your pain. We just had to say good bye to the best cat ever a few weeks ago. I bawled my eyes out while holding him as the vet sent him home. Crying right now, just thinking about the little guy~

My condolences Rhody. I've been here quite a few times...she was a looker. Probably sweet as the day is long. Sounds like you did her right and she had a good life.

salsalady, gasifcada,

My sympathies. It isn't any easier for you I am sure, some things in life are beyond words to describe them, this is one of those things.

Rhody...

Rhody, there is nothing easy about saying good bye to a loved pet. (crap, I'm getting all sniffly again). You can know that those who post know how you feel, cus the've probbly been there...

I didn't have pets as a kid. as an adult, we've had 1 cat dissapear (think it was sick) one dog die at home of old age, one dog put down of old age, one semi-young dog die of liver poisoning from eating plums with pits, another cat just put down riddled with cancer.....Every time, it sucks.

(brb, gotta get the tissues....)

Thank you, Rhody. Two years on but when I hear of others going through the same thing, it does hurt again. Not only remembering the loss of a loved one but because you know what that other person is going through... and it's something you wouldn't wish on anyone.

Not the same, I know, but I will be saying goodbye to another friend in a couple days. She is not being put down but rather she is actually my flatmate's cat and we are moving and going our separate ways. I've only known her for a little more than two years and already it is cutting me up. That unconditional love a pet brings is powerful beyond words.

Right now she is sitting on my lap with her engine running as I type this. :(

Again, my sympathies Rhody, Ann, and everyone else.
