The shelf life of pollen

Anybody know if pollen goes bad, or how long it remains viable? Just curious. I was getting blossom drop, and the pollen pods werent opening. Today i tapped a few new blossoms and pollen poured out and it just got me thinking. Figured id ask and see if anyone knew.
