TS Stem Structure at ground level

In one of my other threads, someone asked about what the plants looked like at ground level..

pictures are worth a thousand words...as you can see, the plants are taking a lickin' even down in south Mississippi...

I hadn't really noticed but there are a lot of the plants that where the stem come out of the ground that are close to 3" in diameter...most are about 2"
