Variegated Jalapeno Grow Log

So a couple years back when I was working on a commercial grow for a greenhouse I spotted this guy when I was sorting through a few dozen of our Jalapenos in 512 cell trays.  It wasn't likely to be a cross, as the seeds came from isolated seed stock from a company that only sells to nurseries. None of the other plants we had ended up looking like this. I was keeping a close eye on them.  We didn't offer any variegated peppers there at the time, so I had a hunch it was something special.  I took it home with me and tossed it in a SOLO cup.

A bit later on that season I snapped a few more pics of the plant.

I waited for the pods to ripen and saved seeds, hoping for good things.   They took a long time to ripen and were quite corked.  Unfortunate that I didn't think to take better photos at the time:

Shortly afterwards I started some of those seeds and these guys turned up:

This is about as far as I managed with them, as I moved three hours away and started a new job.  Many of my plants were severely neglected for a span of a few months and all but one of them kicked the bucket.  I'm happy that I sent out seeds for these to several folks (who did have success with them!) and I am starting to grow some more thanks to Paul G and Chris Phillips.

That's where I am right now!  Hopefully Canedog, Paul and Chris will chime in with their experience growing them.

Cheers.

I don't know why my variegated jalapeños never
start out with all that white foliage. In the three
years of growing, I haven't had one seedling like
that. The variegated foliage always emerges in
parts of the plant as it gets older, so they wind
up with green and variegated sections.

Sure would like to see some pics of the mature
plants that come from that super white beginning.

It also has those curly cotyledons... i have seen that a couple of times and i think that has to do with some growth hormone issues. It probably is forming abnormal roots or showing hardly any rootgrowth at all. Too bad, cause that purple makes it a real beauty. It might be fixable, but that would require insights in it's genetics, wich is way out of our amateur league i quess.

It might has something to do with light intensity. Red apples also become green on the shaded sides. They react to the lower light intensity by replacing the anthocyan by chlorophyl to enhance their energy uptake.

The plants are under T5HO lights. I'm pretty sure it's
a genetic thing. I'm still growing an accession from
the first round of seeds that Matt sent out. My lights
are 'senior citizens', maybe I should replace the lamps.

It could be a genetic thing indeed, but strong lights often help in keeping variegated plants in shape.

Hey Paul, I collected some your your Mattapeno seed from the last train and they exhibited white very early. Also it's entirely likely I've mis-seeded, but what I labeled as your Giant Jalas exhibited white, so if there is a chance of a cross, be on the look-out.

That' interesting, as some other folk growing the
'Goliath' seed have had all white plants as well.
Odd, because those seeds originated from a F2
Mattapeño pure white pod whose seeds produced
a green plant with long red pods. Maybe I'll have to
give some of those a try if I have any left.

One month since hooks. Some of the growth buds
at the nodes are pale, maybe we'll get some early
white branches. All seed from 2021 season.

Seed from ivory variegated pod x 2.

Seed from ivory variegated isolated pod from early
indoor part of grow. Oddly enough, the least varie-
gated of all.

My Goliath Jalapeno from @PaulG seeds has white lateral growths. It grows extremely slowly.

The other Variegated Goliath Jalapeno plant has two open flowers.

Theproblem with all white foliage is that there's not much
chlorophyl to help convert the sun's inputs to energy for
plant production. I still think the sweet spot is a plant with
both green and variegated foliage so there is enough to
power growth as well as variegated pods. I noticed last
year, there were variegated pods growing from nodes
with all-green leaves.

The pods on the plant in the third pic should have
variegation that matches the variegation on the leaf.
the other unique trait I notice is the bushiness of the
white growth
