What are these on my Reapers and Chocolate Bhutlah's

I need some clarification as I'm confused....
 

Two of my plants are infested with this brown sugar looking type substance.  Anyone know what they are?  Maybe aphids or mites?

Here are pictures after treatment and washing down the plants after several days.  Lost a lot of leaves and now have naked branches on some.

I did however instantly know those were aphids from basic internet research.

Interesting puzzle. Logs right? Solid turd logs. Like 8 pounds of apples would be a big pile but 8 pounds of bricks, aka logs, not so much volume and would fit into a 6 pound douchbag.

Well, this whole thread represents some time wasted that I'll never get back... But those pics on the first page? Giving me nightmares. This will be my second season on my own, and I am honestly a bit frightened of the inevitable aphids.
