when to sow in uk for best result?

I usually let the more experienced guys take on questions like this, but since no one has responded...

Depends on several factors. Chinenses, especially the super hots, generally take longer to germinate, grow more slowly, and require more time to reach maturity (except for orange habaneros which grow like weeds, at least for me). So you should take that into consideration. If you want to grow things like bhut jolokia that take a long time to mature, you should probably try to get an early start on it because of the UK's less than ideal climate and relatively short growing season.

Also depends on what you have available for light. If you have a nice grow light/lights, or a really good window which provides a lot of light, a green house, etc. you can start them earlier. The earlier you can start them the better, as long as you can provide them with enough light to keep them healthy before they go outside.

This page says March-April, but again, it depends. http://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/seeds/pages/veg-chilipepper.htm
