The Hot Pepper said:
Yup that's what Ashen meant by SOS. It's also a mess hall dish.

SOS is and always will be what the acronym implies.

I grew up in a military family.

I experienced  SOS first hand as a kid.

Only they used ground beef.

It was SOS then.

It's still SOS now.

That got 'dang swabbie Paulky knows.

He probably even likes it.

Navy guys.

I swear you can't live with these people.

Same here, we grew up on SoS made with ground beef. We called it creamed chipped beef when using dried beef. Always had both on toast. Even sausage gravy was on toast most of the time.

I dont ever remember seeing it at the "Officers Club" but we normally ate the good stuff off base in Misawa Japan. :D

One 'thang I failed to mention in my previous post about SOS.

I hated it.

Sometimes my mother would put peas in it.

I hated it even more.

Pop loved it.

I ate it though.

Because back when I was growing up there were rules.

Be there at supper time.

On time.

Eat what is served.

Or you don't eat.

These days some would say that is barbaric.

And hurtful.

Even abuse.

But when you're 10 years old lying in bed trying to go to sleep.

And can't because you're stomach is grumbling.

You start to learn a few things.

The first 'thang is you better follow the got dang rules!

The second 'thang is respect.

For both yourself and others.

The third 'thang is this.

In this life sometimes one has to eat a shit sandwich.

You don't have to like it.

But you're got 'dang for sure 'gonna eat it.
