Wild Boar Garden´s hot Glog 2023 ✌️

Hi pepperlovers!

I think it is time to get a grow log started for the season 2023. I hope you will join in and follow along. Feel free to give me advice, critics, ask questions and leave comments of any kind! :D

As I already mentioned in my introduction post I am growing peppers since 2019. I am lucky I have enough space to try a lot of vegetable growing, but my favourite are peppers of all kind :hot:

First of all lets get started with my two main spots for the growing. The first one is directly at the house where I grow the plants mainly in buckets. Here will be the plants I want to visit daily (actually several times a day :D) and have a really close look on. The second spot is an outdoor garden some minutes away. Here I will grow all the leftover plants an plants which work better outside of a bucket. Here I grow also most of the other vegetables, especially tomatoes. But that´s another story 🙂

And some big pots for the C. pubescens and C. baccatum 👍

germination:

For starting my seeds I usually use germination boxes. This used to work really great for me the last years. So no need to change anything :)
This year I started with C. chinense, C. pubescens an some wild varieties at 14.01.2023, C. annuum and C. baccatum followed at 21.01.2023.

Once the seedlings got rid of their seed I transplant them into BioBizz LightMix using multi trays. Here I usually get rid of plants which do not grow that great.
For the rest of the indoor cultivation I use BioBizz AllMix. In the final containers I mix up some old soil with compost.

IMG_20230217_153341.jpg

The first few weeks the plants will stay in my cellar under some led lights. The temperature is roughly 20 °C / 68 °F.

IMG_20230226_163739.jpg

Once the weather gets better the plants will get their first sun light, staying at our big window (facing to the south).

IMG_20220403_113559.jpg

I think this should be enough for the beginning. Now you have an overwiev of the growing conditions I have. Next will be my selection of varieties for this season :D

I hope you will be following along!

Happy growing!

Very interesting. They all look good. How long ago did you start the CAP 1487? And how long did it take to germinate?

Mine is still just two cotyledons and a small stem. I was glad it finally showed a hook after almost 40 days. I thought it would never happen.
I put the seeds into my germination box at 14.01.2023. I am not exatly sure about the actual germination date but it took roughly 3 weeks. So far only one seed out of 5 came to life, so the germination rate was only 20%.

40 days sounds like torture! Maybe I just got lucky! 😅😬

Uh I also have a Canario plant going this season, yours is far ahead, but nice to see what I can expect :)
First time for me with the Canario. I am curious about the weather this year. Last year was extremly hot and dry and the C. pubescens did not really like it. Good for the other peppers though 🙂

Did you grow some Rocotos before?

Hello all!

Today I found some more flowers and a friendly guest 🙂

I also had to do some repotting. Most of the plants are now in 13x13 cm / 5x5 inch pots. Biggest I can do indoor with that many plants. I have 10 pots with 5 l / 1,3 gallon for some special plants :)

There were already some roots forming above the soil, really interesting to see. That´s why I burry them quite a bit deeper once they go to the final pots :)

I did, I have grown them with much success outside in the Danish weather, I've never tried them inside a greenhouse before, so perhaps I will run into the same issues you describe for last season  Same first time with the Canario, but I hope it will hit the medium heat level.

My best Rocoto growing year was 2021 so far @Mildfruit. We had a lot of rain and really cold weather for the first month of the season.

A lot of the fruit did not get ripe though and had to mature at the window. Worked actually better than I thgouht :)

In the heat they tend to throw off the flowers and don´t set fruit. I am really curious to see how they perform in your greenhouse :)

Amazing. How long did it take for the peppers to ripen indoors? And was it a South facing window?
There are ten days in between the two pictures, so it took roughly two weeks for the maturing. Yes exactly, the window is facing south. And it was also in the living room, so quite warm :)

To be honest the taste is not as good compared to fruit which ripened in the sun and on the plant. But still good for all kind of recipes :)

Hi everybody!

today a little update on the chilis :)

It is getting really crowded in the basement as the plants are getting some good size. Most of them are in 13x13 cm / 5x5 inch pots now.

The C. pubescens won the race with producing the first flowers! 😍

Some nice flowers on the Canario :)

Also really beautiful ones on the Aji Equatoria

Some plants already had to move to the southern windows. Usually the C. annuum have to go first. Every year I have some problems with oedema under the artifical light. Once they are standing at the windows this problem is not occuring anymore 🤷‍♂️

You can also find some C. chinense and C. pubescens here ;)

Also some C. baccatum with the first flowers :)

The C. annuum at the windows are growing fast now! They are getting a little bit too long if you ask me, but nothing to worry about. They are still pretty stable.

So far I am happy with the season! The good thing is, it is getting spring here slowly. If we get lucky the plants can move out in 4 to 6 weeks already! We usually have a little dip in temperature in the middle of May so I have to be very careful of not bringing them out too early :)

Hi all!

Long time no update from my side. The days have been really busy, but slowly we are getting started in the garden! :woohoo:

About a week ago it was getting really crowded indoors. Not only in the the basement, but also at the two south facing windows. It feels like I have more plants than last year 🤫

living room:

IMG_20230507_083415.jpg

first floor:

IMG_20230507_083445.jpg

basement:

IMG_20230507_083518.jpg

On the left side we have tomatos, basil and cilantro.

IMG_20230507_101205.jpg

IMG_20230507_101153.jpg

And on the right side some strong C. baccatum. Even though I tried to limit their height growth with artifical light, some of them did not really care and almost hit the ceiling :D

IMG_20230507_083524.jpg

As the temperatures have been really moderat and there was no sign of freezing temperatures, I kicked all the plants out a week ago. This was the last time, I could have a closer look on all of the plants. Later on they will be scattered over several growing places.

Let´s get started with some C. pubescens. This year I already gave them some 5 l / 1,5 gallon pots. I think it was really worth it 👍

Some other plants also draw their attention to me.

Aji Cito:

IMG_20230507_110330.jpg

Brazilian Starfish:

Even though this plant was growing under artifical light constantly, it was getting huge already. I had this variety already a few times and this is just how it grows. I hope this will be a monster at the end of the season! :)

C. chacoense:

Waiting for it to branch out a little bit.

Hi all,

let get´s started with part two of the update! ✌️

Criolla Sella:

Here a little comparison of the growth between 5 l / 1,5 gallon an 2 l / 0,5 gallon. Both plants have the same age.

IMG_20230507_110754.jpg

IMG_20230507_110810.jpg

Little Bird of Guyana:

Again 5 l / 1,5 gallon an 2 l / 0,5 gallon.

IMG_20230507_110447.jpg

IMG_20230507_110453.jpg

Some nice pods are forming as well :)

Now lets have a look to the "acclimation zone" in the garden. The plants are getting used to the sunlight waiting under the carport. During the day there will be some sun from the side. The rocks on the ground are also a good prevention from snails. It usually works really good to get them used to the situation outside here.

Hopefully the next updates will be more frequent :D

Nice update on your plants. Will you repot them in larger pots at a later stage or do you keep them in the 5l pots all the time?
Thank you very much @MarcV! ✌️

The Rocotos will be in 40 to 60 l pots and the C. baccatum will be tranplantet into 35 l pots. I want to try out how big I can get them :)

Usually I am going with 10 l for C. annuum, 20 l for C. chinense, 20 to 35 l for C. baccatum and 35 + l for C. pubescens.

Hi there!

Most of my peppers made it finally into their end pots for this season. But before I had to work on the soil mix.

First of all I emptied all the old pots and sieved the soil.

IMG_20230519_151946.jpg

Next step was rinsing the pots with water.

IMG_20230523_095337.jpg

And then mixing the soil. Its a mixture of old soil, some cheap potting mix and some decomposed cattle dung. Hopefully the plants will like it :)

IMG_20230523_095346.jpg

Then it was time to fill up the pots and slowly but gradually repot all the chilis. I started with the big buckets for the C. pubescens (> 35 l / 10 gallons) and the C. baccatum (35 l / 10 gallons). I also have some C. chinense in big pots for some testing reasons. Just want to see if it is worth it to give them a lot of soil volume at my growing location ;)

At the moment they are getting acclimated in one corner of the garden, but shortly I will move them around a little bit.

Unfortunately the contrast of the green pepper leaves and leaves in the backround is not great.

Next things I need to do is planting some peppers and tomatoes in our garden bed. The rest will be planted in our outdoor garden.

Hope you are having a good time!
