Winter Grow in a spare bedroom

Cheers ALL!

I started this a few weeks ago. I have 4 over winter plants. Reaper, Chocolate Moruga, Cappuccino Scotch Bonnet and the fourth lol I forgot. Either not chocolate primo or PurpleghostScorpion.

Seed layout has 6 or 7 herb varieties... I currently have a few germination activity. Reaper, Lemon Drop, cilantro and chocolate Moruga... Thanks for looking.

Glad to see you back in business, Bookers!

The OW plants look really good.

Snowy day! Decided to inspect plants closer. Found some curling, some brown spots and a few minor holes. I looked deep with light blew up pictures... I don't see anything and gnats are gone for now. Could have been the shots of neem??? Idk...Also using a heating pad couple times a day for seed tray.

Maybe a lil OCD kicking in. Cheers!

Nice snow day Bookers!  And none of it stuck to the roads.  I totally agree with keeping an eye on those gnats for a resurgence.  I question whether neem really has any effect on them unless maybe if you use neem cake.  They also love to start working the drain holes if you take the soil surface away from them.  I freaking hate fungus gnats with a passion when they start to proliferate.  Would much rather have aphids.

Good morning THP! I'm going to post several pics. I am a tad worried about the health of the plants. Growth is steady and even look like possible flowers coming in. I just just did a deep watering as i have been giving small amounts sporadically for the past couple weeks without a deep watering. I see some falling leaves, brown edging and some black strips on leaf stems. Could be nothing idk...I have sprayed with neem and dish soap once a week at least. Fungus gnats are gone but have reemerged in my seed tray. I will address that accordingly. Thanks for looking any comments are always appreciated. Cheers...

Hey Bookers.  Sorry to hear you're having concerns about your OW's.  I'd recommended stopping the dish soap and neem oil treatments and seeing if that helps - though it can take plants a while to recover from Neem "overdose" if that's what's wrong.  Neem (and dish soaps, especially certain types) can be really hard on plants.  The Neem adds up and the leaves get oily, which interferes with the operation of the stoma, while the dish soap can strip the leaves of their protective layer.  Neem instructions recommend not using it on recently transplanted plants until the root systems have fully recovered and treatment schedules are recommended at 7-14 day intervals, the shorter 7 day intervals only until an infestation has been knocked back.

Neem treatments for fungus gnats typically are soil-based using Neem cake, not Neem oil, and don't involve spraying the foliage. I've read that Neem cake in the media might be effective against larva, but I have never confirmed that.  Adult gnats, not being sucking insects like aphids and such, aren't affected by spraying.  They really have no interest in the plants beyond the soil, where they lay their eggs.  That Perlite layer on the soil top will cause them to hang around the plants less though, because they don't see and can't really access the soil well.

Anyhow, just my $0.02.  Hope those flowers keep coming in for you and start setting pods soon!

Lol. Just turned my phone on and this was on the screen.

Sorry. Pocket posting.

Good morning here in PA USA... It has been a couple weeks or one lol. Even though I have great success in season, I seem to be struggling in this winter grow. I guess I get what I get?

Just to catch up. Fungus gnats are still lurking and giving me fits of anger lol...
I've hit em with neem, a layer of perlite and peroxide.

They seem to be jumping between my 4 OW plants (not there now) and my seed tray.

Seed tray is looking sad. I have a few that are doing good and I have a few that have disappeared. Fingers crossed lights on fan going drying out for a bit... just dedicated 1 light to germination.

Cheers everyone thanks for stopping by happy holidays !!! [emoji847][emoji6][emoji38]

Hello everyone! It's been a couple of weeks and my situation is similar... I have the seed tray going and it's pretty pitiful...I have 3 still going out of 36 and I've kinda given up and started a new seed tray. I have also added a heater with a thermostat. I have 2 totes to start a few kraty plants. Masterblend and net cups coming in a few days.

Im confident new seed batch will be better and I'll enter them into hydro as soon as available.

My major concern is my 4 over winter plants. The leaves are continuously growing and that's never been a problem. It's the condition of the leaves concerning me. They even grow an occasional flower that falls ofcourse...

Yes they had a neem od... I think we discussed. I haven't needed em in a couple weeks. I did today. See the leaves spots the brown edges. As they grow and look bad I pluck em and throw them out. I'm really not sure where to go... I think initially I was trying to just keep em alive as previous years. I was hoping for better growth...

Thanks again for stopping by. Can't wait for spring lol...

After a little research. Is it possible I don't have a disease problem. Just low potassium? Wishful thinking... my normal additive for a few years...

Brown edging and crinkled leaves... chime in

Thank you in advance.

Hey Bookers.  Really like your round two setup and the totes.  Looking forward to seeing those take off.

FWIW, I don't see any indication of disease on your OW's and I'm not thinking of a deficiency in the nutrients present either.

Things I'd be considering are environmentals, especially in the root zone and lighting, and residual stress from the change in environment from outside to inside and/or the ratio of root pruning to foliage pruning - though frankly I don't see anything here that alarms me.  Are you seeing new growth at the lateral nodes and tips?  If so and if that looks good I wouldn't be too concerned about condition of the older leaves.  It's not uncommon at all for the plants to disregard or cannibalize old leaves when the environment changes abruptly.

All of those leaves are new growth. I pruned and cut them all back and started with no leaves. Some new growth have the crinkling, brown edges and the dark brown to black line in the stems of the leaves. Ive never seen that. 2 plants are from 2019 grow 2 this is their 3rd time. I am truly thankful for the comments and am glad I don't have to toss them yet. All 4 plants exhibit same and when starting the new hydro didn't want to give fuel to the fire. Lol Thanks

Whoops, apparently I started responding before your second post and never saw that post and pics until just now.  Definitely the Neem oil residue is still affecting them.  I associate the streaking you're mentioning with stress, often from cold/conditions before coming inside or from the cut-back.  I will often prune back to remove stems and branches showing the streaking if any is present when I start my OW prune, as often the streaking appears higher on the plant first.

Personally, I'd be looking for where there's quality new grow from the laterals (as opposed to the tips).  If there is, that's a great sign.  Neem OD definitely has the potential to kill (permanently) sensitive growth nodes.  If those nodes look healthy and the upper plant is struggling, I'd (personally) consider pruning back to that good growth.  This results in a balanced/bushy plant again, versus a sparse and top-heavy one. Also, once pruned, light will be able to effectively reach the entire depth of the plant, not just the top.  Sometimes I'll do a staged cut-back, removing the upper/older growth in favor of the lower/newer/healthier growth on only half the branches then, once the new growth starts to get going on the pruned branches, I'll do the other half. I do this so the plant can pull energy from the remaining established leaves while the new growth is getting established enough to provide energy, itself.

Anyhow, just some thoughts.

Yup, your OWs look a lot like mine, except that my most precalent issue is the green peach aphids. I simply squish daily, sometimes twice. I tried a rosemary extract systemic that proved ineffective, but since the solstice I see a lot of filling back in going on and most of my plants, esp Rocotos, are getting better at putting up with the bugs. I'm using natural daylight ONLY, letting the plants get the full effect of natural elongation of the days.

...but many of my leaves are curled and knurled and eaten away in small measures.

Bookers, I believe that this is the lot we draw when attempting the unnatural with imperfect conditions. Your plants look very much like they'll survive, and perhaps outdo themselves next season in reaction to the persecution of over-care. Of course it's early yet, but just forget I said that...

I don't remember what Rastaman said it first, Tosh or Perry or Marley or none of them, but Kep de battle de blood clot, mon...This is a classic Man vs Nature themed endeavor!!
