Yaargh's 2012 Log

This year I'm doing much the same as before.

I've germinated several pepper seeds:

Orig. Yellow 7 from PepperLover
Papa Joe's Yellow Scotch Bonnet from Chris
Bahamas Goat from Chris
Sport from Tomato Growers
Pimenta de Padron from Tomato Growers

Along with the peppers I've germinated a few tomato seeds

Amazon Chocolate from Diane's Seeds
Berkely Tie-Dye Pink from Wild Boar Farms
Sun Sugar from Trade Winds

I started all the seeds in rockwool but will be growing in pots. A gardening store close by carries the Fox Farm line so I'll be using the Ocean Forest potting mix. Right now the pepper seedlings are fine but my tomato seeds are iffy, I can always start more though.

I'll start posting pictures once I've potted them up.

The past year I've had to give away my plants before even having a flowers, those I gave my plants to have caught the pepper bug so it wasn't a complete waste of time.

I like those Org 7's, those are some huge pod's with a citrus kick.

Are the sport peppers that your growing have thin skins? They sell so many kinds of bottled sport peppers here in Chicago. In the past I've taking some smaller unripened Serranos and pickled them. They have a nice crunch factor, thicker skinned than the typical "Chicago Sport" pepper.

When does your night temperature warm up, Can you plant out in Feburary?

My university dictates that April 1st would be the scheduled date in which I would be free from frosts. So, unless the weather is clearly warmer earlier that will be my planned date.

I haven't grown the sport peppers to fruit before. I'm not sure but for what I can recall the sport peppers I've eaten have been thin walled.

Stopped by the Chile Pepper Institute this morning to check it out and to look for Big Jim seeds. Turns out that the second week of April they'll be selling both pepper and tomato starts. So, if I fail miserably I'll now have atleast a back up plan.

I got bored, bought a Jiffy starter, was out of rockwool cubes. I'm soaking a few seeds. Some more Numex Heritage Big Jims, TradeWind's Big Sun Habanero, PepperLover's Butch T, and Fatalii sourced from SIlver Surfer's pod will be popped in the pellets tomorrow

Put up a new video. Things are moving pretty slow but should be good for the April 1st plant out and possible April 15th in ground planting.

Man I wish I lived within a short driving distance of the CPI. Do they sell Bhut starts?

When I asked the lady she said starts would be primarily Numex varieties. I assume they would be selling a bit more considering they are selling tomatoes as well. Even though the bhut is not a Numex variety it'd probably be in their best interest to sell them.

I did not start any bhut varieties in the hope that starts would be available.

Well I decided to trash a few seedlings. They were developing what looked like bacterial spot. I soaked some new seeds in a bleach solution and will try again.

Just a redundant update, was bored.

A little update.

At least two seeds of each variety I sowed has germinated which is great considering the age of several of the seeds and that I never refrigerated/froze them. Very pleased with the coir expandable pellets I used. As for as preparing seeds, I feel that using diluted bleach helped, as none of the seeds have shown any sign of black spots as of yet.

I think I'll have to pot up at least three of the larger tomatoes. The second week of April is getting closer, hope my buddy can land a family garden plot as this could be my first experience planting in ground.
