PIC 1's......Pod Pornage.............2012

Here's the start on my grow log. Well no pods yet but I have to start somewhere, and away we go!

The seeds in the containers are all c.chinense. They were dunked in a germinating solution for an over-nighter on December 1st.
This was the first phase of the germination process with plantings happening every 2 weeks through the month of January.
The annum species and the mild/medium strains will get planted late Jan through early Feb.

Most of these are "Super-hots.

Here's a shot from today, things are looking up and up.

Here's a unique looking seedling. It has 3 cotyledon's and a set of 3 true leaves. The seedling is a Trinidad Scorpion Green, seeds are from Chris (cc). I've seen the triple cotyledon with my Coronong's but not the triple set of true leaves at the same time

Here's another seedling that caught my eye. The leaves are as dark purple as my Dutch.Hot's. This one's the Purple Bhut Jolokia seeds were also from Chris. I know the leaves will eventually turn green.....but right now they look pretty... :cool:

And finally another overwinter and was an over-achiever/producer last season. That's why its here. It's's the TS Butch T

I start everything indoors to move outside in May. Some get sold at local consevatories and garden clubs. I hope to end up with around 150 plants for myself.to plant in my yard.

Thanks Superhot, I put my feet in the water a little earlier than I have in the past. But with many new varieties with not only the peppers but with tomatoes ,and other veg. I need to overlap this process.......but hey thanks for the inspiring words.

Nice setup! Do you have a room that is covered with mylar sheets or something? Also is there a benifit to using the square seed trays than the round ones?

Sorry more questions, what soil are you using to start your seeds?

I'm thinking of going with the 72-cells per starter tray also. But on a much, much smaller scale, and not starting until late next month.... :cool:

Mylar sheets.......hmmm .... that sounds like a good idea.

I have 2 different grow area's, lined with 4 x 8 foil backed polyshield underlayment .1" thick. Loews sells them in the insulation section. I glue 1 x 2 lengths of pine to the back as a frame to keep the sheets solid.The foil does help reflect the light back

If your referring to the inserts in the flats, there's a few sizes. Those that are shown are pretty flimsy throwaways. I also have similar 72 cell that are more rigid and deeper, I use those for my tomatoes, as the tomato roots spread pretty fast and need the extra room. Those are more durable and are difficult to find now adays.
Round or square either one works. some companies give stats on cubic inch deminsions. The larger the better
.
I use a mix,of Fafards Metro Mix combined with Baccto.Its a nice light weight mixture. Another good one that's finer textured is Hoffman's seed starter or Schultz starting mix. Somet people use jiffy pellets....they work, just don't let them dry out especially when the roots poke thru.

I bottom water my flats so the medium will wick up the water. I also spray the top only with a misting bottle, to dampen. The worst scenario is to water from above with a spout and bury the seed deeper in compacted medium.........that can result in seed rot.
Heck, a seed can probably germinate in a crack in the sidewalk ...under the right conditions. Bottom line is to keep it simple and be consistant with that idea...

Sure how ever I can help with the info.:

One room is 14 x 16 ft and has 9ft ceilings. I have 2 doubled tiered 8ft long wooden plant "racks" each has (8) 4ft T8 fixtures with 4 bulbs each.,6500k. Same room has between the racks, which are about 8ft apart, 3 400w mh lights with 7200k bulbs.

Second area is in my sub-basement which is about a 10 x 10ft area 9ft ceiling with (8) 6 bulb T8 4ft fixtures with 6500k bulbs. Thats were my overwinters are growing. I also have 2 600w HPS. ....that I hope I don't need to turn on..

Strategies, I try to be organised and keep good records including times and dates. I don't use any compost, castings, guano or any "dirt" brought in from the outdoors.....that helps keep the "pests" away. I'll plant the longer season varieties first..
Light cycle of 18/6 seem to work for me. I use Fish Emulsion when the plant have 3 sets of true leaves, then I'll add epsom salts in a misting bottle to be used highly diluted every 2 weeks.....Thats just part of it.

Wow, great organised setup you got there and what an beautifull plants already. Full with healthy green leaves, great job so far. I'm gonna build something familair like you, only gonna use black/white plastic sheet to cover the rack. From what I've read this will give you the best light reflection and it's really cheap :) Can you tell us wich varieties you've got for this season?

Hey Gary, I still have some old school left in me. I remember my first set-up.... vin.1982 It was in the basement of my 1st home. I started out with (4) 2 bulb T12 4ft fixtures over a ping-pong table in our basement. Big thing back then were the Orange Bell Peppers from Holland. Rarely in the stores, so I scored some ,scraped the seeds out and grew them along with my Thai, Orange Hab and Jalapeno's.........Wow times have changed!...... Same season I built a plant stand in a West facing window of our rec room and hung flouros over it. Best of both lights at the time . My wife asked me "what are you doing now?" Well that was the start of "Doing" it every year......Ha

. If it starts looking bad then,....no pictures.....just kidding,...... sometimes mistakes happen, problems occur, If that does happen there will be photos, Its all a learning expierence for all of us.

They're actually T8's.....I wayed out the situation and for as many as I have it would not be feasible to replace the occasional bulb or two .
