Spicegeist 2014 - The Year of the Bhut

This year I'm growing primarily bhut/naga types.

Not much to look at now, but thought I'd kick things off since I'm already starting seeds:

Here's my list:
  1. Red Bhut
  2. Choco Bhut
  3. Yellow Bhut
  4. Peach Bhut
  5. Shabu Jolokia
  6. Naga King
  7. Naga Morich
  8. Naga Suomi
  9. Dorset Naga
  10. Guwahati Bhut
  11. Pale Bhut / Bih Jolokia
  12. Jay's Peach
  13. Fatalii
  14. Lota Bih
  15. C. galapagoense

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here...but a couple of pages back someone asked about picking bhuts orange or red...

that is entirely up to you...they are hottest when they first start turning their ripe color (orange in this case)...after that, come of the capsaicin is metabolized into sugar making the pod relatively sweeter...

I read that in some "scholarly" research...

by the way my friend...you have got some great looking pods and some rare ones too...

Thanks AJ.  Huh, that's interesting, did not know that...

Wow, there is a huge difference in the OW and the first season pods. The OW round looks much more "true." Thanks for the information man... I wasn't sure if I was going to be OW'ing anything this year but now you've given me serious food for thought.

Well, there's also the factor of my limited light and smaller pot situation.  Generally, given my patio conditions, it'll take a while for my plants to get bigger.  My theory is that the bigger and stronger the plant and roots, the bigger the pods...

Another bhut shot:

Peach Bhut, Choco Bhut, and a Jay's Peach Scorpion:

The Peach Bhuts are a bit darker than the J's Peach.

Same pods, different light:

Just tried the peach pods.  The peach bhut was hotter and had a more full flavor.  The j's peach is a more productive plant and I like the color and shape of the pods a little more than the peach bhuts.  As I mentioned above, I did pollinate a flower on the peach bhut with j's peach pollen, so that may be the one peach I grow next year... unless it turns out red.

Great looking chocolate bhut, can't wait to have my first ones ripen to see if they are decent unlike the yellows that are a flop.

Hm, I'll have to get over to your glog to see what you're talking about...  these choco bhuts are pretty cool.  I grew three plants, and they're pretty much identical.  I'll probably overwinter one of these and see if I can get a spot in a community garden next year, I know I'd get much bigger pods if they got sun all day long and had more space for root growth.

Also, here's what the typical mature peach bhut pods look like, very uniform.  Not very spiky or overly bhut-like otherwise.

Looking great Spice!!!  All your bhuts have inspired me again this season ... so I have 4 different bhut variants (5 if my Bhut Jolokia "Assam" ever awake from there slumber) growing ...  once they get going (and by going I mean start producing pollen regularly)  they are great producers in my climate...keep on growing !!

Very nice, that's good to hear.  Did you get your hands on a peach bhut to try?  This is my first year with the peach varieties, they're fun to have around...

Last year I gave what I thought was a yellow bhut cross to sanarda, and they turned out like this:

They looked so much like yellow bhuts, I thought they must not have been what I thought... there are some different possibilities, but I won't bore you with the details here...

Anyway, as I was going through my seed stash last night I found the original seed I sent her.  I might give those a try in 2015...

Yeah I have the some Peach Bhuts (From Pepperlover) and J's Peach f4's ... not sure which I will be growing ... maybe both

Lookin good Charles!

Those yellow "bhuts" in the bag have such a vibrant color.  They look like they could be a cross with a fatalii maybe? I don't have any experience with the yellow bhut phenos though. Just a stab in the dark.

Nice guess, but it wouldn't have been a Fatalii.  I either marked this pod because I crossed it OR because I made sure it was self pollinated.  If it was a cross, it would have been with a primo OR this other pepper that was itself a cross, but ended up looking very much like a yellow bhut...

As usual great pictures and awesome looking peppers.  Those peach ones are making me wonder what they taste like... Hopefully like a B.Goat and Bhut mixed, that would be awesome without a doubt!

1.You are now the reigning KING OF BHUT PORN.
2. Beautiful pods.Absolutely.
3. The Cumari cross..."what prodigal son said".... ;)
4. Those beauties in the sack, look like "True Fatalii's".
Really nice job this year Charles!

I'll have enough seed in a few weeks, just waiting for some pods to ripen on the plant.  I'll send some your way if you want to grow it next year...

Haha, thanks buddy.  I can send you some of the cumari cross if you want to grow it.  It might actually be easier for me to send pods out...
