what kind of chili is this growing?

Hi, I've started to grow some unknown strain of chili, please help and identify the kind of chili. They're just starting to produce some purple fruit.

did they look like mine here .

I'd say not purple flash, mine had leaves with green, white and purple from the start. However, they didn't survive to flower and from what I understand, the leave coloring can come later on in the growth rather than the beginning....

Yeah a lot of the times if you get an "ornamental" plant they either have no spice or flavor, or they have some spice and turd flavor.  The only exception I've found so far to this is Sangria, which taste just like bell peppers and are rather pleasant in salads.  They're all edible...but if you purchase them from big box stores there's no telling what kinds of chemicals they may have pumped into the plants to get them producing nicely.   It's always better to start your own seeds so you know what goes into the soil.

How do you tell if it's an ornamental plant or not? is it edible?

"Ornamental peppers" are just peppers that are grown mostly for their good looks. Some ornamental peppers may be beautiful plants, but the peppers may not taste so great. All peppers (Capsicums) are edible. It is only the things that look like peppers, but that aren't actually Capsicums (like Jerusalem Cherry) that aren't edible.

Yours looks to me like some kind of Capsicum Annuum, quite likely an "ornamental" variety. So if you have a Capsicum Annuum with purple flowers and pods that start out purple, there are many possibilities of what it could be. Chinese 5-Color and Bolivian Rainbow are just two ideas. Although your plant is a bit bushier than my 5-color plant. There are also quite a few other possibilities. I think you will just have to let the peppers grow, and see what the pod shape and size is, does it grow upright or hang pendant, what color changes the pod goes through as it matures, to narrow it down. I think we can rule out Purple Flash though. PF has purple leaves, and the fruit is darker and rounder.

For now, I would say just enjoy your mystery pepper. It is certainly an attractive plant  :)
