Problems with Chili

Hey I am 32 years old and I have been eating chili for about 13-14 years. In that period of time I have had stomach pains pretty much daily. Without any exaggerating, around 40-50 times it has been to a point where I've passed out from the pain. At one point I even ended up in a hospital because I passed out in the middle of the street and smacked my head into the curb. Every single time it has reached a point where I have passed out, I have stopped eating chili for a while. But I am such an idiot that I get temped after a while and then eat it again. It is usually 7-8 hours after I eat it the pain comes. It is absolutely the worst pain I have experienced in my life and it lasts for about 30 minutes (with me having diarrhea). When it is all out, the pain is completely gone and I feel just fine. I know it sounds like insanity to keep eating it, and the past 2 years or so I've cut back because the pain has just become too much. I can't do it anymore. My problem is that food taste so bland to me without chili on, which I am sure you people here can relate to. So after a break, where I am bored with the food, I end up "testing" my stomach again and then pay the price for it.

Do any of you have any idea why I might be reacting this way? And is there any way to prevent it? If not, do think there's a type of chili that might not cause it. I really have no idea where else to look.

What kind of peppers are you consuming that cause this pain?
That is a very good question. I know for a fact that jalapenos gives me these problems very badly. Whenever I go to a sandwich place and tell them to put jalapenos in it, it is going to become a nightmare later that day/night. But I also bought some chili/salt at the supermarket that I put on some of my food. Didn't even put a lot on, but it was enough to really mess with my stomach. I think it is just about any kind of pepper. But some are worse than others it seems like.

I assume other people have had the same issue, or know people with the same issue. I doubt there is any point in going to a doctor. They'll just tell me to stop eating peppers

See a doctor. What you are basically asking, is for us to diagnosis a possible medical disorder. And from the sound of it, quite possibly a very serious one.
I am just asking if anybody have had semilar experience with chilis. I figured it would be very likely that others have. I do not have any of these issues if I don't eat chili peppers. If I had the issues regardless of me eating chili or not, I would definitely seek out a doctor.

are the sandwich jalapeños , pickled ?
Some places they are, some they are not. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

Those symptoms are extreme though. With myself, certain peppers upset my stomach more than others. I stay away from those. Others I can eat with little to no discomfort now or later. In some situations where someone consumes a whole super hot they can experience what is called capsaicin cramps so severe it puts them into the fetal position for up to several hours. I don't ever recall them passing out from them.

What did the hospital staff tell you?

Passing out is a known possibility when consuming too much extract but even then I've never seen it and only heard of it happening once when a guy downed a bottle of 1 million. Your symptoms are way out of proportion for what you're eating.

What is interesting is that it doesn't happen when I eat it. It happens 7-8 hours later. Like if I eat it for dinner I'll wake up in pain around 3-5 am. The hospital staff just took care of my physical injuries i sustained. They took blood tests and everything looked like it should look.

Yeah maybe you are right. Could sound like IBS. So your brother can eat chili now?

Pretty serious issues, I would say, no it is not normal for the amount and the heat of the peppers you're consuming. To me it sounds like you've got a medical thing that could be anywhere from ulcers that the peppers are irritating to colitis, or something further down in your intestines. You really need to see a professional asap, the peppers irritating it could very well be an earlier warning sign of something much more serious than passing out.

BurningGut,

I'd first suspect that you have a severe allergy to some component in the chili.  I doubt that it would be the chile peppers, or the meat, or the tomatoes, or the beans...
But, how about FLOUR?  Or some other background ingredient that isn't in most other foods that you consume, such as maybe too much Vodka?

  :drunk:  :shame:

LOL

Well I get the reaction from pure chili (nothing added) as well. Also most of the time I avoid flour or grain in general. But really, from so many years I've noticed that it is only when I eat chili these things happen.

As far as
liquor!! I do great with that. Never any issues. One of my favorite things in this world :-D

Refering back to the op, are we talking about chili as in hot pepper or chili the bean and beef meal? I took it to mean you were refering to chili peppers.

We are talking about hot pepper. Like slices jalapenos in a sandwich, or anything like that.

BurningGut,

Sorry, I was thinking of "chili" as in the food prepared with meat, tomatoes, onions, beans, etc....  WITH hot and spicy peppers.
Since you mean peppers as in "chile" peppers in any type of food, I would suspect ulcers or other ailments of the stomach and intestinal lining.
Peppers and the capsaicin do not cause or create ulcers, but may irritate them.  More probable, it would be the food that you eat them with...
i.e. vinegar, tomatoes or possibly salt on a sandwich....  the acids would be responsible for the aggravation.

If the peppers (chiles) are causing you pain and discomfort, you might actually have an infection...  Research the bacterium Helicobacter pylori

Thanks. Yeah that might very well be the case. I'll look into what people have suggested. Will book an appointment with my physician
