Grass Snake 🐍 in the garden

New beds are watered and mulched. I put that plastic fencing down to keep the leaves from blowing away and deter my dog from digging it up. There’s 3 big planters I need to fill with dirt next.

That's almost exactly the same as my setup for the personal garden! I use them especially for roots - carrots, potatoes, garlic & onions.

I've put marigolds in the cinder block spaces, because they repel a lot of insects I don't want on my plants. Looking into some other things to plant there too - build a natural barrier around the plants!

How deep are those dug?

Do you plan on growing anything in the building blocks square holes?
We grew chives, parsley, oregano, & spring onions last season in them with great results.

Waiting to see if anything other than the chives come back this spring.

Just planted Kennebec potatoes and white Granex onions in the new beds. Onions took up only half a bed so trying to figure out what else I can plant in that space. I’m thinking it might be a good spot for my Thai soldier beans or Black beans. I got to say, I’m not too impressed with the new dirt I mixed up. It’s too heavy and too woody. I know it will get better with time but I’m worried that the onions and potatoes won’t do good this year.

I don't think I would put beans in there with the onions. Even bush beans.

Probably too woody for carrots. What about lettuce or cabbage? At least for spring
Yes I still need to plant lettuce and cabbage so that's a very good possibility. Do Legumes and Alliums not play well together?

Not a problem that I know of, just that the growth habit of the beans I've grown would have them spilling all over the onions, even the bush varieties. As I said - *I* would not do it :)

If you can put in a trellis, beans would totally be possible. Just make sure the beans don't cast shadow over the onions. That's my two cents, so you have two opposing pieces of information on here. 😀

Potatoes do very well in heavy soil. I have very, very, very thick clay and potatoes always loosen it up. It's wonderfull how much work they do in that area. As for wood in your soil, that could be troublesome. For wood chips to be converted into humus and ultimately nutrients, organisms need nitrogen from the soil to do so. You'd need to replenish the nitrogen for the growth of the potato plants.

Last weekend before they get put outside for good. These plants been in those small cups way too long. It’s amazing they look as good as they do. I’ve only fed twice with houseplant strength Miracle grow. I did like the space it saved not using the regular size solo cups I typically use. My concern is that they’ll be stunted being in such a confined space for so long but let’s hope not. Figs in the back still not showing signs of life😓

CD speaks the truth they look great and they'll probably go nuts once they're put in bigger pots or outside - tough love remember

Your babies must smell so good already! 😍

Myself, for basil, I plant about 3 seeds in a little pot of about 5 x 5 centimeter. I space them put evenly. I just let them grow in there till they look big enough to move into something bigger. Then I take about 4 if these little pots with three seedlings each and plant them all in a bigger pot with a diameter of about 40 centimeters. This gives me enough plants to keep harvesting basil throughout summer. I usually keep three or four of these big pots.

I also mostly sow basil in April, a month or month and a half before it goes outside. It's a fast grower.

I have no idea about the other two. I don't think I've heard of lemon bee (?) and oregano is just always there in my garden.
