glog It's never too early to get started!

Sooo... 2022 season is over and most of my 2023 plants are already there - no reason not to start a new thread already! 😃

See my previous glog... https://thehotpepper.com/threads/2022-too-early-to-get-started.75362/

While all my current plants are technically overwinterers, only a couple have grown through the 2022 season and are considered interesting enough to keep for next seasons grow.

Let's start with the famous Schneider farms SB plant, which will be going into it's third season in 2023. It currently doesn't look all that nice but that was also the case during the winter of 2021 so no worries here...

Next in row is my Scotch Brains plant...

And then there's the Humble Servants Homestead (HSH) SB, which was also elected to stay for next season...

Well what do you know! This is schneider farms scotch bonnet from last season that I wanted to overwinter but kicked out because it didn't seem to do very well. It's been outside for a couple of winter months and had to endure some mild freezes. Today I noticed that it is still alive! I'm going to take care of it again, even if I already have 2 new schneider farms plants going right now...

Don't fall for it Marc, he's playing with you!

I still have something hidden that hasn't germinated yet. It's really nothing special actually... It's from a free seed pack that came with a recent seed order from WHP. I'm not going to talk about it for now as I might still decide not to continue with it.

I still needed to disclose what this actually was/is ☺️. Well... here it is!
It's a WHP II scotch bonnet. Justin from WHP raves about this variety and I have long been wanting to give it a try...

And here's another quick look at my current plants...

The Humble Servants Homestead (HSH) scotch bonnet plants...

The 2 Schneider Farms scotch bonnets... one from THP and one from WHP:

The Jeromin is in full production again...

The yellow 7pot brainstrain from THP is a really strong plant that sets a fruit on almost all the flowers it produces. I think this is going to be a keeper...

Reminds me that I would still like to get my hands on some 7pot brainstrain seeds of the 2018 growdown. I didn't join the growdown back then because 7pots seemed totally useless to me because of their heat. Changed my mind in the mean time...

The 2 Papa Dreadie plants. While the 7pot sets a lot of fruits, the (overwintered) Papa Dreadie (plant on the right) produces lots of flowers but doesn't set a single fruit... 🤔

The Zapotec jalapeño is the last of the bunch. Not really a nice looking plant and not may pods yet...

Recently I found joy in growing out the crowns of pineapples. Not sure if they will ever flower, let alone produce a fruit, but the plants do grow out nice. They do take up quite a bit of room once they grow out though...

A couple of recent ones...

...and what they become after a year of growing... a year ago this one was like the one above on the right. Difficult to manipulate because of the spiny leaves...

This one is grown from the crown of an ornamental pineapple...

In the mean time I already assembled a list of possible varieties to grow out in the 2026 season. It's of course still way too early (🤔) and the list is already too long, but here it is nevertheless...

Not in order of preference...
  • Aji Margariteño
  • Bad Brains
  • Baker Creek Scotch Bonnet
  • Chocolate Scotch Bonnet
  • Fatalii
  • Guadeloupe Black
  • MA Wartryx
  • Madame Jeanette
  • SB7J
  • Scotch Brains
  • Santa Lucia Gros Islet Scotch Bonnet
  • Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Yellow
Still want to add a couple of varieties from Refining Fire Chiles to that list...

@MarcV , both yield an edible fruit with a pineapple-like flavour. The fruit of Bromelia pinguin, however, is very acid and causes blisters. People traditionally roast the fruit before eating it. I haven't tried the fruit of Bromelia karatas yet, but it is more commonly eaten and appreciated (but perhaps only in the Yucatan peninsula, I don't recall the details well) than B. pinguin. I've got seedlings of both, they are slow-growing in the beginning but will also produce pups later on. A short video from Australia (fully developed seeds are supposed to be grey-black, not white):

Very interesting 🙂 I guess I won't find these plants here, let alone the fruits. They do seem to produce more seeds than a regular pineapple, in which I usually find at most one seed per segment. Never tried growing pineapple from seed. I heard they take quite some time to germinate...

I heard they take quite some time to germinate...

I bought fresh seeds in Mexico and both species began to germinate after ~1 month. They do seem to germinate erratically, however. I also germinated Bromelia antiacantha (🇧🇷), and had 100% germination after 2 weeks.
Vreeken... Never heard anything good about them. Perhaps they've changed though.
