S 510 Would Make it Illegal to Grow Your Own Food

Wow that's crazy? I know you couldn't grow stuff yourself and sale it, but to not allow growing at all?? That's insane? With all the talk of being Green and saving the environment how is it possible that they even consider banning people from growing their own food?

The FDA is not your friend! Even though they supposedly are there to protect consumers, there are MANY documented cases of the FDA releasing dangerous drugs due to pressure from the drug companies.

And many large food corporations and drug/pharmaceutical companies have the same parent corporations. Food companies aren't trying to make you healthy, they are trying to keep Americans fat and unhealthy so they buy more drugs, which doesn't solve their root problem, it only masks their latest symptom!

I'll do some quick searching, see what I can find for proof-

Take this bill seriously! I've heard of the push by corporations to do this, but did not know the name.

This post may be better off in the Politics group because it could get hostile.

I didn't read through the entire bill but just glanced over it and notice Monsanto name in the paragraphs above.

Monsanto was involved in a lawsuit against a small rural farmer that it was found was using a genetically modified canola seed that they developed but the farmer never purchased the seed from them. The GM canola was developed to be resistant to a certain herbicide(that they developed) and they own the patent. When a farmer approaches Monsanto to purchase this seed they must pay certain fees to Monsanto and can not keep seed for growing in the following year. The buying farmer also bows to allow Monsanto to enter their property and take random samples for DNA testing. The farmer in the lawsuit did not purchase his seed from Monsanto and said it must have made its way onto his property in a variety of ways. Monsanto decided it was their right to enter the farmers property to take samples even though he did not purchase the seed from them. The lawsuit resulted in the farmer turning all his seed over to Monsanto for destruction. The farmer had to purchase new seed from another independent supplier and Monsanto is not responsible from further polluting the farmers field in the future from their GM seed.

Potentially the bill could put all the power into 1 or 2 companies for seed replication of all kinds not just products like canola. So, as a farmer you would have to purchase certified DNA guaranteed seed from a selected company. How would that effect the smaller farmer of Organic products, since the Organic community has their own regulations that allow farmers to use term Organic.

Man, it could get messy!

You know Burning, it will get messy, but dont we have laws that are supposed to stop a company from becoming a Monopoly??? This is messed up, I am tired of the government telling us what we can and cant do. Wasnt the USA founded by men who didnt want to live under British rule and wanted their own laws. Now we get a dictator elected (Obama) and it all unravels (dont blame me though, I voted for the American). I recall another Dictator now too long ago, his name was Hitler, look what happened, he nearly wiped a WHOLE nation of people off the face of the earth because HE didnt like what they were doing, trying to live the way THEY wanted to.

I am in favour of stricter regulations on foods entering my country, I would like random testing on foods from China/Vietnam/Thailand especially around pollutants and chemicals used to see if it has entered the food. Perhaps I am a little paranoid or untrusting knowing the lead content in other products, plus when you look at the pollution in their major cities(where people have to wear masks), that stuff goes up into the air then has to get precipitated back to the earth. I think we are lead to believe that foods from China are raised in a peasants field and we are doing good by purchasing it. Growing up I was lead to believe the average Chinese person made $500 per year, today I am looking around and their appears to be a lot of mainland peasants in my city living in $700,000 homes! I try to due the math to see how they could afford such homes and the figures just aren't adding up, maybe they are very, very old like 5,000 years old.

I looked at words link and it maybe that every time a new bill is introduced all the "No People" go immediately in no mode and issue domesday messages - we get the same thing here especially around healthcare and as soon as any type of change is mentioned all the no people start screaming it will lead to American style health care putting millions of Canadians without services and no access. They call it "two tier" and only the rich will be able to afford healthcare and then the fear mongering boggie man is released to our leftist news organizations - mean while private healthcare does exist for our politicians and of course our sport heroes and Provinces that fear monger the loudest are that ones that have the private facilities.

I won't comment on the Obama thing, that is for the American people to reflect on, we have our own leftiest on this side of the boarder to battle.

monsanto will try this and most likely ( i don't want it to ) but they have SOooooooo much pull they could possibly win. the thing about the farmer burning was saying, theres a lot of other examples that are exactly like this, and every single time monsanto wins, Soy beans for example. farmers that do not purchase monsanto seeds get cross contamination from neighboring farms, and no matter how long they are in court monsanto will drag it out until that farmer has no money left. and it doesn't stop there they are trying to prove that people with the machinery that takes the seeds from said crops to keep for the next year, people who have been doing this for generations are 'criminals' and knowingly contributing to monsanto's Loss of profits LOSS OF PROFITS?! give me a break, the company that gives us rBST, genetically modified and owned seeds, create seed LAW in India, where there are NO seeds that you can keep because monsanto says so. if this happens there should be an uprising of americans as TJ said, ( loosely ) governments should fear their people, not the other way around.

told you the post could get messy, we are now teetering on the pros and cons of capitalism and corporate executives, lawyers and governments in backroom dealings, I would like to say all that is needed is a quick, independant commitee that examines these types of issues and makes a quick rational decision(to save the farmer the heavy cash output) but then we are into kangaroo courts and communism.

Didn't mean to stir up a fuss. Total Food Control is coming, if not with this bill then surely down the road. Various countries will all fall in line with the UN with things like Codex Alimentarius.

As far as growing your own food, few have the ability to grow enough to sustain themselves and family anyway.

As that wise sage, Dilbert once rhetorically asked, "We're doomed, aren't we?"

I live in Thailand and I don't think you're paranoid at all. I will not knowingly eat anything from China. When shopping here I look at labels. Almost all of the produce I eat here is locally grown, some of it by me and my wife. Before I left the states I tried to avoid all imported produce; which meant no fresh tomatoes in December. My point is this; eat locally which means seasonally.
Don't let the bastards get you! Cheers.

Everyone is reading into this alot more than is what is there. It is not to stop people from having home gardens. The purpose of it is to limit some of the strains of foods being brought in and also grown in the US. Monsanto has one of the largest seed banks in the world, and have genetically modified them to resist many viruses and diseases. It is not just Monsanto involved in the whole thing. Every company that has a part in this, including Monsanto, Syngenta and Bayer are in it for 2 reasons. One is to make genetically stronger plants and that all also have a pharmaceutical division that plays into it also. These companies spend alot of money developing drugs because produce is grown in undesirable conditions outside the US and brought in with varous bugs and diseases that have to be delt with. This bill also says that if a farmer in Mexico does not grow an item approved by this legislation, then it will not make it into the united states.

Not just in this forum but lots of others. Hype, hysteria and hearsay. I'm surprised, given the intelligence of most posters in this forum, this thread ever grew legs. The OP's theory is about as far off-base as the earth being flat.

Yeah, you can believe that the "food police" will visit your home and spray your garden with Round-Up if you want. And after that sit down and share food from Monsanto with Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. Sorry, but the immortal words of Bugs Bunny come to mind: "What a bunch of doofusses."

Mike
