soil Potting soil and bagged compost

Just wondering about good (and not too expensive) brands of potting soil and compost. And where to get them.

No miracle grow or scotts please:pp

I just scored 3 bags of Permagreen Mushroom Compost. They are a local colorado company (thats why I go with them).
Got it at Lowes. $3.61

Kellogg Patio Plus potting soil is $4.97 for 1.5 cu. yds. at Lowes and I think some Home Depot's carry it as well.
It's unbeatable for the price.

Why no miracle gro? I have used many brands of potting mix from cheap ones all the way to fox farm and I stand by miracle potting mix all the way.

Well miracle grow from what ive seen isnt the best

Currently i use the potting soil from the nursery i work at. It seems to be an alright mix.

I love foxfarms ocean forest but If I happen to have miracle gro I usually mix it with some compost 50/50 and that works out pretty well.

Yeah they are expensive i got lucky this year my local hydro store had them on sale for 10 bucks a bag it was such a good deal. :) You can get some kellogg and add some compost or manure i had good results with that too.

I am using this cut with peat, compost, a lil lime and perlite. working pretty damn good and drains very well

I usualy mix my potting soil with compost, a little mushroom compost and some casting an guanos

I guess i was just trying to find something close to foxfarms without the price

I would suggest mixing up your own if you want to save a few bucks. However this is only a good option if you need a good amount of soil as to save money you need to buy in bulk then mix and use.

I would also suggest getting or mixing soil based on your specific grow area and needs. I mean guys can toss out suggestions all day and they are good suggestions, but are they good for YOUR grow condition and area?

I mean would you use the same soil in zone 1 as you would in zone 11? Think about it this way if your specific location gets 6 hours of sun a day and your average temp is around 75 in the summer with a peak of 80 would you want the same mix as someone who gets 10 hours of sun a day and their average summer temps are 95 with a peak of 110?

Buying a good bag of soil is a good start, but it's only a start and no matter what you get you need to look at your specific area and amend the soil so it either drains or retains water specific to your conditions.

Good Luck.

Well most of my peppers go in ground

The potted plants are in the greenhouse and are normally not peppers. But i see what your saying!

I use Orchid mix to germinate pepper seeds. I also use Scoot's and an organic garden soil and mix the two.

I use a heat mat to germinate the seeds at 90F.

I have grown soil to hydro. I have made my own pine based media aswell as my own peatbased media. I have used promix hp and other mixes. I still say that miracle gro works great. It has the needed time release fertilzer to get the plants off to the right start. I feel the drainage is perfect because it has a lot of compost forest material fines. I found that even the plants I just potted up with miracle by itself with no added perlite the drainage is fine. I no longer add perlite to potting soil but rather a custom pine based mix. the point is MIracle gro is great by itself. I can get 2 cuft for 10bucks and it is ready to go right out of the package. It is also very easy to find.

I germinate in a propagator with Miracle Grow Seed Starting Mix.
It is one of the best out there according to the Redwood City Seed Co. here in my area so I tried it and have used it ever since. Not hard to just make some with peat and perlite though.
Once the seedlings are 3-4" tall I put them in 4" square nursery pots with Kellogg Patio Plus until they are ready for their final home in 5 gallon containers.
