WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
  • 5 Jalapeño
  • 1 Cayenne
  • 1 Serrano
  • 7 Datil
  • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
  • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

A few links to some of my better posts ;)Did you say powder?Did you say MoA?Black light night shots & horn wormsReviews and taste impressions in no order

Love the pool shot! They'll pop. Just give 'em time. I've got some I totally gave up on that I went in to toss, lying on their sides, that had three sprouts well after a month from when they were sowed. Sprouts at a 90 degree angle searching for light.

Your seeds are sitting by the pool waiting to germinate. Mine are next to a window that is stopping a couple of feet of snow from drifting in. Gotta love the diversity on The Hot Pepper Forum! :)
How true and very good of you to point it out :) diversity is key in my life … I think we have that in common ... lets celebrate it!

I agree they should "pop," I have seen the similar time frames and longer. I'm glad that I did not give up either but boy was I surprised when I had that happen. To be honest the sunning and pool shots were only to add a little levity, not sure that came across. Thank you for checking the glog and sharing your experience :)

Edit for update 1/5/13 9:02PM EST:
I was busy with various odd jobs most of the morning today but in the afternoon we attended the young ones soccer match at the beach. Lots of fun and this gave me time to harvest a 5 gallon bucket packed with seaweed pictured below. I honestly don’t know why I’ve not tested this out before as its free and easy to harvest. Per numerous reads around the net (link, link, link, etc.) I am now testing some seaweed out on my in-ground pepper plants and have also started a seaweed tea. If things go well, I’ll start harvesting more and use it as multch as one of the articles I read suggested it. I may also take a stab at making my own fish emulsion soon but I didn’t get a chance to go fishing today :(

Quoted from University of FL here
Seaweed will improve the soil by increasing the organic matter and by adding nutrients essential for plant growth. Nutrient concentrations are available and vary by species, but in general, seaweed will have near neutral to slightly alkaline pH, with a nutrient value of 1.5% nitrogen, 0.1% phosphorus, and 1.3% potassium or a little higher. In addition, it will contain 5% calcium and 1.3% magnesium, plus it is a great source of essential micronutrients.

Ya mon! You got me hungry and eager to get 'em growing all in one glance! Nice beginning to '13 my brotha!
Thanks Shane, I'm eager to see your growth and others here as well, from last years glog's I've been able to get thru, you guys rock in your growth and I've learned things here I didn't know :)

Now for a momentary break from peppers ... I am not sure if anyone remembers me joking about this picture being a pod in this post last Thursday Jan 3rd but if you didn’t catch it then its not hard to miss it now because it bloomed …

I attach the babies to a tree or something else (bamboo, coconuts, orchid box, etc.). While babies, I temporarily attach them to a wire allowing them hang in diffused lighting and mist three times a week till the roots grow out fairly long. They’re then ready to come off the wire and be placed onto something more permanent.

Hey WalkGood, awesome glog! Great pictures... man I'm salivating just looking at those plum red peppers and the food pics!
Lourens thanks for popping by and checking the glog out, I appreciate the great feedback/comments and yes the family has been enjoying the heck out of the JA habs. While I couldn't say for sure, I attribute the bigger ones growth to chicken manure ... can't recall who turned me onto it but I get loads of the stuff from a friend that grows chickens for eggs and it seems to work out as long as I dry it till it becomes hard pucks that can break down to a thick dust to mix into the soil.

Great tip on the bird guano... Got plenty ducks and a peacock hanging around my patch... this is giving me ideas here in South Africa... how about Ostrich - what do you reckon? One poop should do the lot? :D

Hi Ramon
I'll be checking in to see how your seaweed tea experiment comes out... I live a little too far from the coast to try something similar, but had good results watering with diluted seaweed extract last winter. Cheers

I’m not sure about any of them, hopefully one of the experts here in THP will tell us both. I stumbled on chickens by reading an article about growing hot peppers a few years back that said chicken poop was one of the best ferts for peppers because it has the highest Nitrogen (5%) and Calcium (9%) available in its class but you must dry it out really good or you’ll OD the peppers, hehe!
Love a bit of cooking in a glog, gives me the munchies every time.

Mezo.
That happens to me as well when I’m reading others glogs, thanks for checking de glog out mon :)

I’m hoping it works as good as I’ve read, I also took some fresh that I rinsed out a bit (did not want to over salt) and placed it around the in-grounds. I don’t see any negative effects yet and they look really good but I don’t know if it’s due to the seaweed. That said, I’m going to go full force like the article said and cover up all the ground around the peppers to see what happens, I’ll let you know. BTW this reminds me of a funny story, when we were young and the waves were flat, we'd put seaweed on our head so the wave gods would send in the swells, wishfull thinking I guess but I'm sure others that saw were ROFLTFAO
Ramon, your getting some real monster pods there, I'm lovin it!
Thank you for checking, the door is always open :)

Raining here all morning so no outside pics :(
I took a picture of our Christmas tree below. We fly with the live tree thing and put it back outside till next year. Next to the tree is our nativity scene, it’s made of clay by the Indians that live along the Amazon river, a friend of my wife’s family deals with them in Venezuela and we bought it from him. Don’t ask me what tribe as currently there are “about 500,000 Amazon Indians survive, which are distributed among an estimated 500 Amazon tribes, including about 75 un-contacted nude Amazon tribes living in voluntary isolation.” Who knows, maybe some of them grow peppers :)

The little brown hut is home made, my wife is very handy with a saw, hammer and nails ;)

Now onto something pepper related and no I’m not drinking pepper infused Appleton VX, lol. Below is how/where I store my seeds, first into little 35mm film canisters that I hand label and since I have many Jamaican seeds, I use an Appleton tin box. The tin box is very decorative and lined with some nice insulation inside. The whole thing is then stored in a cool dry pantry closet.

They fit nicely in rows of six, I keep an Excel list showing the type and additional data. Using “ctrl F” makes it easy to find what I’m looking for

I have a huge bag load of these little 35mm canisters back when I mainly shot 35mm SLR.

Back in the day when there were photo developing shops all over I used to get them easy. I would stop by when I need some and ask and usually they would just pull their trash bag full out and give it to me. Fill one with some cheap baby powder and it will be a great target at 100 yards.

Nice idea Brian wish I had done that too, there's never too many little 35mm canisters one can have ;)

For Xmas our two boys gave me a decorative pot and I just filled it a few days ago with a Jamaican that was probably getting rootbound in its one gal. pot so hopefully this will allow it to strech out its roots :D Wana say thanks to #1 & #2 for the nice gift :) Since the pot has different decorations, I tried to show both sides ...

Your seed storage is far more organized than mine, which involves piles and wishful thinking. Those pots are da bomb, man! And the pods on the Jamaican are absolutely perfect :)
Thanks :) If I wasn't organized I'd lose the seeds, I'm the kind of person that needs it and luckily the limited organization that I do in my life has helped me a lot, now where the hell did I leave my keys ;) (only jk'in, dem keys are on a fishing hook by the door, hehe)

I'd be happy with a video of him catching it! I haven't gone ice fishing in years, so with fishing season months away I need a fix.
