WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
  • 5 Jalapeño
  • 1 Cayenne
  • 1 Serrano
  • 7 Datil
  • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
  • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

dude?????????!! you need to look at the cooking threads we love some food porn! nice looking plants also.

Jason thanks for stopping in and commenting :) I have been looking at some of the cooking here, impressive! There's so much to read and catch up on. Remember I'm noob since November and you guys have years on THP. There's only so much back peddling I can do now, give me a few more days ;)

you should crank that saw up and clear that mess you got going on there, hehe!
lol, can't get rid of my source wood for smoking ... but trust me, I run it more often than not with 5 huge live oaks and all the other stuff I got growing. It's the 3rd one I'm on now, hehe. I should have just started with a Stihl or Echo and be done with it. That said, this one (crappy as it is) has lasted me over 8 years now and it’s still running great. I had to pull the chain break and put a new burr on the chain ... the other day and almost took off my finger just checking the sharpness :o

Ha! I see WalkGood and Shane are trying to start a fashion trend!

Great looking pods, too!

Ripe pods, food and masked man with chainsaw on the first page.... excellent initiation!

I will be watching your progress with all those seeds.
Thank you for checking out the glog! The masked man was only in jest, you should see how scary I normally look, lol

Man, that omelet looks good. I'll be stopping in from time to time to see what other interesting things you come up with.
Thanks, I put a pepper or more in most foods but don't always take a pic. Thanks the wife took a few, the rest was easy for me, heh

lol and thanks for the pod comment :)

Nice pod shot on page 1. Like your use of the '41 Lady Liberty. I have a few of those.
~35 days until I start my seed.
Thank you for checking out the glog and noticing pics, they’re really tasty too. The Liberties are definitely my favorites of the old ones, they have that classic smexy look :D What kills me is the selling price, only weight & current price of silver unless its minted, if you collect you might want to check out Coinflation here, good info and reading ...

Just found your Glog. Agree with the others, great start! Pods on the first page. Will definitely be following this one. Good luck!
Thanks for the kind words coming from one who has a truly impressive glog :)

On another note, one of my Datils is finally showing signs of flowering. These have been the slowest growing peppers I’ve ever grown. From the germination stage which strangely took weeks right thru their grow, very slow IMO.

Seems I have some form of mold issue on 2 plants :( please look here to see and any help will be welcome, thank you!

*Not trying to intentionally double posting but wanted to post link here to keep track in my log of the issue.

Interested in the 'Jamaican Habanero'..... I was growing 2 Caribbean Red plants and the first to flower ended up being a Jamaican Red Hot. The second plant flowered later and it's for sure not a Jamaican Red Hot. Curious to see if any of those pods turn out like your Jamaican Habanero. Nice to know what you have before you shove it in your pie hole.

you have some kind of bacteria, you need more air flow and more light, less wet. they make sprays that kill mold on your plants im sure they have something at lowes, walmart, home depot, ect.

you have some kind of bacteria,
Thanks for the tip, I'm believe you and Prehensile's opinion. Do you think the initial cause could have been from the honeydew holding in dampness or infection?

you need more air flow and more light,
Outside growth, the wind howls by where potted plant is located and currently getting 3/4 day of sun, not sure I could get anymore in my yard.

less wet.
This is possible, while I only water 3 times a week we had some heavy rain for a few days in a row a few weeks back. But for some reason I believe that honeydew from the white flies held dampness from water or could they have transmitted the bacteria?

they make sprays that kill mold on your plants im sure they have something at lowes, walmart, home depot, ect.
Currently trying the H202 recommended by Prehensile here, started with it this early this morning, while I could be wrong the plant looks healthier … I’m going to give this a few days to see if I note changes. While I’d rather not loose plants, if I loose a one or two Datils I’ll look on the bright side that I learned something, thanks again as I think you’re right.

honeydew holding in dampness. for sure!

looks like you doing everything to fix it,good luck!

watering 3 times a week could be to much, this time of year? it is so easy to over water im very guilty of it. i usually water way to much or dont water at all, haha.

if you only have a few plants i would water when leaves sag, then drench the piss out of plant.

Good point on the watering, I'll cut back and gauge by the leaves more. In the winter I put out a 5 gallon bucket filled with water and mark water level to gauge the evaporation rate/amount, I loose a few inches a week in winter. Winter is so dry here that water evaporates much faster than summer. The ideal way would be to have a clear bucket with soil in it so see any water retention, I have good drainage and the soil seems very dry so I've been going with the 3 day. On the other hand my Jalapeño peppers leaves were severely drooping this morning so I did water them but not the infected Datils, only sprayed that H2O2 on them.

First off a very special thanks to Greg (PIC 1) for the seed trades and k. skwerl for the Thanks giving day contest where he sent me some seeds. I have finally put my 2013 list of peppers that I will be attempting to grow (list below) adding to my current crop increasing total count to 53. Hopefully time permitting I plan on starting the seed soaking on 12/31/12 for 24 hours and planting into eggs on the 1[sup]st[/sup] day of 2013. I don’t want to add too many peppers to my existing crop so I’ll gifting a few more plants that are not counted in my total glog, these are in small ½ gallon pots and are now around 7 inches (4 Jalapeños and 4 Datils). If I have good luck with the 12 new starts and all 53 prove to be too much work, I’ll gift additional plants from my current crop. That said, I'll be keeping all my favorite JA habs (15) and hope I get at least one of each 12 to sprout ...
