Progress of my hot pepper plant using a DWC system

Hi guys, I just thought I'd share some pics of my hot pepper plant using the DWC system.
Now this is the first time I have tried this with such success so I'm really excited about it and so far it seems to be doing pretty well!
It's currently at about 3 weeks after transplanting it and it's about 2 months old from planting it from a seed.

Looking good, I am not a dwc expert, but it looks like the water may be a tad to high. I was told you want the water level to be a oug 2-3" below the net cup. I was told that at my local hydro store when I tried it a few years back. Maybe and expert can weight and confirm this or not.

Also, whats growing on the power lines? It looks like there are little pineapples on them.
 
I keep mine just below the pot. The biggest issue I think is that the bucket is not light proof. The pepper plant is looking good though. I get free white buckets which I use for DWC's but I always spray them black to ensure that they are light proof.

iwas thinking the same thing with the water level but it seems to be doing fine so far so i didn't want to drop the level. as for the stuff on the power lines, those are bird vines.

Do you think I will have problems with it not being light proof? so far it's been out in the sun for about a week or more like that and i haven't seen any algae buildup.
 
Keep at eye on it. The ducktape trick mentioned by scratchzilla seems like a great way to light proof an already setup dwc as you cant paint it now but if you wanna wait and see what happens then go ahead. I will be subscribing to this thread. I have never not painted a bucket so I am interested to see if i waste my time

I start seeds and clones in this bucket, and always get a little algae if I go more than 5 days without changing my soup.

Sorry to hear that but so far there has been no algae with mine and I usually change my solution every 7 days.

Does anyone know if the size of the container the plant is in would reflect how tall the plant would be? I ask because my container seems to be very small for the size of the plant that it's going to be. I use that container because it was the only one available to me at the time and I was really excited to get started with it.

Ok guys, a little update...I have noticed that algae is starting to build up and I also noticed that the roots are turning brown. Some of the other very smaller roots or shorter roots I should say have turned black at the tip. I have changed out the solution and also washed out the bucket completely.

Could the algae be the cause of the roots to turn brown though?
 
A spine thermometer will dothe trick.

I'm convinced lightproofing your bucket will do the trick. Not only will it keep light out, making it harder for algae to bloom, but it will help lower your temps.

Ok so water temperature seems to be about 85F.
I have light proofed the bucket using electrical tape but my concern though is that the temperature may actually increase.
 
Whoops, I got autocorrected! I meant to sat simple.
I use reflective duct tape to lightproof my buckets. My grow room sits around 80f and water temps rarely leave the 60s
 
Well I'm monitoring the situation and if it gets worst, I'll have no choice but to move it inside as the temperature get pretty high during the day and I don't want to risk losing my plant!
 
You could always add another airstone to try and increase your DO content, which decreases as temperature increases. This is why high water temps are problematic
 
I have a question, what grow medium are you using? I use plant-it expanded clay which is the same as hydrotone. Just what my hydro store carries.
