contest Growdown Throwdown 2018 Yellow Brain Strain!

Here I am in the eleventh hour! I may have been fairly M.I.A. the last 4/5 months, but I have not forgotten the friends at THP.   My GDTD is not what I had hoped and I am certainly scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of finishes, but I owe it to all things spicy to show my...

Peter_L's Twenty Eighteen: New Plants, Same Scene

I hope the next few days forecast (~50 0F nighttime lows) is an anomaly and not an indication that this will be a short Minnesota growing season. Let's get those lows back in the 60s! I'm guessing there will be quite a bit of flower drop the next few days, but a lot of my plants are already...

Peter_L's Twenty Eighteen: New Plants, Same Scene

It's that time of the month again...   What time you ask? Pepper time!   A good portion of the last 2 weeks was excellent weather for pepper growing. Sunny, upper 80s, and kind of high humidity. There were a few plants that grew a foot last week. And some decided to go crazy with flowers (which...

    Should I isolate peppers?

Do you want to be certain that the seeds you save will be nearly identical to the parent plant? (Assuming the parent plant isn't already a hybrid). If yes, then yes, you should isolate your plants or at least a branch of it. If you're ok with surprises, then no. If you have other supplies of...

    G.I.P. 2018 I can't make up my mind Glog

Hey! Good to see some pictures. Looking great as usual

    Bonnie Habanero

I have an Orange Habanero grown from seeds which has an isolated lineage to a Bonnie Plants Spartacus Habanero (~5 or 6 years ago). Looks pretty similar to yours, but they are consistently in the 100,000+ SHU range and they are definitely orange. While I think the taste of this variety leaves a...

Peter_L's Twenty Eighteen: New Plants, Same Scene

I hope it will get easier every year. There is certainly an incentive to do so! It's even more difficult because I don't live where most of my plants are so I only see them once or twice a week. The advantage to that is, there is always progress every time I look at them  . At least...

Peter_L's Twenty Eighteen: New Plants, Same Scene

Hello again!   Things are starting to trickle in now. I imagine I'll have enough fresh pods from here on out to cover all my needs. (And in 3 weeks, I'll have too many and in 6 weeks, I'll have WAY too many  ;) )   I've been a bit too busy to try practicing hand pollinating flowers to make...

Peter_L's Twenty Eighteen: New Plants, Same Scene

Sorry I'm late. Just got back from a longish vacation (very nice and relaxing) and I didn't get around to posting pictures I took before I left. Also quick apology on the image quality, I'm using a different phone temporarily and the camera is a lot worse.   In general everything is going well...

    hybrid Easy / Popular crossing

I highly doubt they are any easier to cross than other cultivars. I imagine it's the super hot genetics people are looking for. A lot of people want hotter versions of their favorite tasting or shaped/colored peppers. Similar reason the PDN and BBG7 are so common in crosses, those cultivars have...

container Reusing compost in a container

Some end up in the garage, most end up outside under the deck. I make slightly more effort to get the fabric bags in the garage because I think that might give them a little longer lifetime.

Peter_L's Twenty Eighteen: New Plants, Same Scene

Thanks!   It's not like you have much to prove though, you've already been above and beyond. And I've got some plants that don't look the greatest (mostly still really small), but that's the secret.  :shh:  I can look more impressive by only showing the good stuff!  ;) I think that's the trick...

container Reusing compost in a container

I definitely re-use 90% of it. Don't personally even have the space to dump all that media. If you grind up the plant matter and add that back to compost or put it in the bottom of larger containers, it should be a nearly net-neutral on the nutrients (only losing what is in the pods you take)...

Peter_L's Twenty Eighteen: New Plants, Same Scene

As promised, two weeks later!   Everything is moving along and growing. I think nearly every flower on that Aji Mango plant from two weeks ago set so there's a ton of pods on it. Nothing on my C. pubescens yet though... oh well, I know they're finicky. The in-ground garden is doing really well...
