glog Purple Pepper Project

The goal is to (have fun and) breed a pepper that has purple skin, purple flesh, purple foliage, good flavor, and medium heat (~30-50K SHU).

I’ll also experiment with fermented sauces, paprika, etc.

If you want to give me feedback on what makes the “perfect” purple pepper,
take this survey!

I’m growing 12 plants on each of four mobile platforms. Each platform has wheels, handles for easy lifting by two adults, and a self-contained irrigation system that connects to a hose.

I chose this mobile setup because our yard is mostly concrete, and we’re having work done on our home. If needed, I can move a platform by truck to another location.

Just kidding I'm sure he's already got an eye on this thread.

I've grown Cheiro Roxa, it was beautiful plant. It had that classic floral Chinense taste and was hot as Hades.
🤔Hmm, I'll keep that in mind!
Thanks for watching my back GS😅

The list:
  • Violet Sparkle
  • Black Hungarian
  • Buena Mulata
  • Jigsaw (C. annuum)
  • Puma
  • Cheiro Roxa
  • Murasaki Purple
  • Purple Pumpkin (C. annuum)
  • Mini Dragon Tail
  • Purple UFO
  • Cayenne Purple
  • Filius Blue
Nice list

Aside from Cheiro Roxa, the others I've seen that are purple at maturity include De Neyde (hot), Purple Petite Bell hybrid, and Just Pretty hybrid. I'm not sure on the persistent purple genetics with the two sweet peppers since most turn red, but both are described as maturing to purple.

Realizing that most of you have grow tents and grow lights for your starts. I don’t have one, so I’m trying to maximize the sun exposure and taking them in at night.

These were seeded on 2/16/2025. It seems they are coming along slowly.

Hey Purp. That looks like a temperature issue. Soil quality could factor in. Watering maybe a little, but you'd see cotyledons dropping with watering issues and I think they'd look worse. If you were to pop out one of the soil cubes and break it open you'll likely see that the roots are severely stunted.

My fix for that is to prepare a warm area inside with subdued light. Get a quality seed starting mix like this seed starting mix. Mix it up with water until it's moist, but not really wet. The point is you don't want to have to water them for at least a few days because you don't want to compact the soil. it should be super fluffy with a good air/moisture mix. Refill the cubes or other small containers not more than 2 or 3 times the volume of the cubes.

Then take the soil cubes out one-by-one, break them (if they're not wet, they should just sort of crumble) so that only a little soil remains on the roots (I don't think there will be much in the way of roots) and replant the sprout into the new mix. Keep them warm with indirect heat - you don't want a heat mat running constantly underneath them that stresses and dries them and also you may need to water soon, when you'd prefer to put that off at least a few days. Give them maybe 3 days like that then you can increase the light gradually until you start seeing nice green growth. When they're ready for water, give them highly diluted liquid nutrients (very highly diluted) and gradually increase the concentration with subsequent waterings while still keeping it significantly diluted until you see that they're strong. Based on the one in the forefront that I can see well, I'd expect noticeable recovery within a week and noticeable growth within two.

Thank you, @CaneDog , I followed your advice. I repotted into larger cells with good seed starting mix. I made sure the mix is not saturated and will leave in a warm, bright place without direct light. 🤞

There was very little root system, so I gently rinsed off the old potting mix, and laid the roots into to new cells. Despite being small, the plants seem healthy.

I also seeded the new batch of purps: Bhut Purple Peach, Tiger Jalapeno, Tiger Anaheim Purple, Naraka, Black Hole Horizon, and Tasmanian Black. I seeded more of the original batch based on friend’s requests- seems like people want to try the milds: Violet Sparkle, Black Hungarian, Murasaki Purple, and Buena Mulata. Also, throwing in some purple veggies for my sauce experimentation: Purple Petra basil, Purple Goban tomatillo, and Thai Blue butterfly peaflower.

Awesome! I hope they respond well - and quickly! Be careful about too much light for the first day or two as they don't really need any light for that settling in period, just the warmth, and bright light can interfere with the root development. Looks like you have some good fermentations underway, too. Reminds me it's been a while since I've done one.

These batches all have the same peppers - habanero, serrano, manzana, pasilla, and Anaheim. All fermenting in 3.5% sea salt brine.

Batch 1: Just peppers
Batch 2: Peppers + a hint of garlic & shallot
Batch 3: Peppers + a touch of blackberry
