glog Nick's 2025 Glog

I am very excited to start from seed this year.
I don't have a lot of experience with (hot) peppers so I decided to do a trial for a several varieties of one specimen.
Initial plan is to have chinenses in unheated greenhouse (and maybe in pots?), while annuums/baccatums outside (again, maybe in pots).

I planted the chinenses on Feb 3rd to give them a head start. I was a bit too excited, so I decided to also start a few more:

Last four already germinated after 5days (28 celsius with heatmat) and I am starting to worry I will run out of under-LED space after potting up:)
Now I am torn whether to reduce temperature or wait until all chinenses have germinated.

Aji Champion keeps on going :) I am tempted to keep 2-3 flowers although I am 3 weeks before transplanting... I think this one will go in a big pot or in the ground, seems prolific!

As you can see, the primary shoot is already out of the light.. I will move it to a south facing windowsill and pray it does not halt growth.

Edit:

I managed to hang one of the 4 barrinas on the place where the tomatoes were moved! Now there will be some 150 PPFD /4 DLI beside the sunlight in the morning. I am now hopeful!

Update:

All going well and the weather is suspiciously good this spring... Due to size limits I moved both trays outside after my last post, and the situation was hectic. Fortunately only one tomato plant suffered a lot from not enough light due to the overgrowth, but most other plants were okay, if not a bit stretched competing for light.

I moved several peppers and tomatoes into the greenhouse on May 1st.

Due to travel and other obligations, I didn't put everything in the ground yet. I also bought some pots of various sizes (9,12,18L). Habanero chocolate, wild purple Guatemala and another sweet horn pepper gifted from my neighbor were transferred in the 9L pots.

Black Cobra, Zebrange as well as a Jalapeno were planted outside.

So far everything seems to be adapting well except Habanero chocolate, which is a bit sunscalded.

Exciting news are, Aji Champion is forming several pods!!!

Peppers outside are still slowly growing, I've seen a few pods on the Black Cobra. I'll take some pics next time!

I didn't post for quite some time, it's been a bit busy but the garden is growing well!

I had some aphid issues in the pepper plants growing in the ground in the greenhouse. Lemon habanero and an eggplant seemed to be the most affected but it seems to be better now (no pods though).
The rest of the plants are doing well, with quite a few pods , some of which I've already harvested!

The weather this year has been quite warm and dry, let's see how it goes until September 😁

I need some advice.

The 7pot Primo plant I have, suffered from aphids early on which real delayed its growth. It was quite stunted but now it has grown considerably and started producing many flowers and quite a few pods.

Unfortunately it is outside here in Belgium which means that it will not be able to produce a full load of pods that could ripen at this point.

My question is: will removing flowers and many of the pots will allow the plants to focus on on hopefully ripening the few of them that are a bit bigger?

i would say yes that COULD (and likely would) happen. but it also still might decide it wants to grow new flowers/pods, in which case you "wasted" the plant's time and energy by removing the ones that were already there...

as we learned from jurassic park, you can't force nature to do what you want.

if i were in your shoes and contemplating this action, i'd likely remove all flowers but leave all pods, because if it thinks it is "not done having kids" more flowers will be created. if the amount of "kids" it has is acceptable to it, then it may choose to nurture those and forget about more flowering.
 
Thanks for the insight @growyourown ! I think I will follow your suggestion and remove all flowers and leave all pods (I think they are less than 15 including the tiny ones). Even if one grows in decent size let alone start ripening, I would call it a win.

And it's not that I would miss not having a huge harvest of these peppers, I tried today a piece of Habanero lemon, and it was very very spice. So not sure what use I could find for a 7pot primo!
