That is the new way they teach math. No idea why they do that, but both of my kids were taught with this new way.
That isn't really related to the common core stuff though. That is a whole new set of standards unrelated to the way they do addition these days.

One other stupid thing. There is no more BC as in Before Christ, the year 0. They now call it BCE. Before Current Era. <face palm>

I don't see whats wrong with that Jeff? I mean the math thing is stupid, but I bet you wouldn't have an issue with it if it was BM (Before Mohammed) changing to BME (Before Modern Era)….
