    i agree with the above.

    we always get stupid bad storms and along the gulf coast we get these micro storms coming off the gulf pretty much all summer... but these rainfall events where we are getting 6-11 inches? that shit is like once every 20 years usually.

    we have had 2 such extreeme rainfall events in the last 2 years.

    i should clarify that we never get rains like that that are NOT associated with a tropical depression/storm/hurricane or some such thing like that.

    Having grown up on the southeast of Houston, I've been through plenty of tropical depressions/storms and know what you're talking about. Yes, most often the "average" amount of rain hits, but I certainly remember years where flooding was very wide-spread due to day after endless day of rain. Still... I miss it!

    Our facilities people at work installed a water tap right next to our raised bed. Old one was 200 ft away across the parking lot. I owe somebody a 6 pack.

    Should I till this cedar mulch from 2013 into my raised bed or remove it before tilling?

    Don't till in the cedar mulch as it'll take a long time to decompose. Compost, leaves, worm castings are good to till in. Put the mulch in a bucket or plastic bag and use it for mulch on top only.

    this is a bit of an over simplification but, if you till in a heavy carbon source like wood chips it will tie up the nitrogen in the soil while it turns the wood into compost. Pull it aside, amend or refill the beds put the mulch back on and re-top with fresh mulch. I go for 3in but this is much disputed

    Packing them too tight can decrease production of each plant but it will increase the variety you can grow. So it is really a matter of what you want.

    My main problem is the 2nd bed I got in our community garden has way crappier soil since the person never really amended it and I'm not sure how much good I can do in a month. Already ordered 24 plants a few weeks back though so got some decisions to make.
