    Winter in June

A hail storm blew through northern NJ where I live and work, yesterday. Driving through it was surreal. http://wcbstv.com/watercooler/washington.township.hail.2.1045714.html

Damn Brown Recluse Bite Strikes Again

Thanks. It could be some sort of immune response though, the body itself doing it. Then again without enough research.... IN other words with enough research they might find something about it. It's just the venom can't stick around. It's not a virus. This is probably an immune response as...

pests My worst fears are confirmed........Aphids

I have no luck with any of these remedies. I had to sprinkle cayenne powder around due to squirrels and the frickin cayenne powder that got on the leaves burned them. You'd think frickin hot pepper plants would be immune to some cayenne powder? How'd these things ever evolve in the wild?

Damn Brown Recluse Bite Strikes Again

Ok, thanks for that. I did sense a bit of hostility and/or attitude - "Oh, and by the way, Gudrun's mother is a trauma surgeon"... - (hopefully mistaken, but where I live that "Oh, btw" phrase is laced with major 'tude - make a comeback like that in NJ to someone you don't know well and be...

Damn Brown Recluse Bite Strikes Again

Thanks. I'm not trying to be a jerk about it, but if I had a dime for every thing that has been passed on to me as "fact" (all by well meaning and convinced individuals) that later turned out to be nothing more than some urban legend, I'd be richer than Bill Gates.

Damn Brown Recluse Bite Strikes Again

No offense, but can you point to an established medical source as proof of that? I haven't been able to find anything but perhaps my search term was deficient.

Damn Brown Recluse Bite Strikes Again

Did the doctors tell you that or did you get that over the Internet? I doubt that any spider venom could stay in your system for life, unless it killed you soon after biting you. The body should eventually flush it out. I'd go to a dermatologist. Maybe it's an allergic thing.

It's just more anti human propaganda from the self loathing greenies.

    Damn squirrel gonna get his

We have hawks and turkey vultures. Well, the vultures aren't hunters but scavengers. The hawks are another story, but they don't seem to put much of a dent in the rodent population. This is a residential area, but we have lots of trees and stuff - some woods nearby. I have deer the come...

    Storm coming through

Windy storm squall line coming through in northern NJ... At the urging of my wife,... her, I , and our son got most of the plants off the deck and into the garage. The ones in the rectangle planters and a few I don't really care about stayed outside. We'll see later how they fared.

    Damn squirrel gonna get his

I repeated one by mistake - check out the one in the middle with the pumpkins. It seems slow but them, WHAM! I laughed out loud.

Ever see those squirrel catapults on YouTube?? :P

    Damn squirrel gonna get his

The big fat squirrel(s) in my yard came onto the deck and was digging in the pepper pots. Didn't damage the plants yet but snapped off and killed my sunflower. Little bastard... I have a large jar of cayenne powder. I sprinkled it all over and around my pepper plants and their pots. Let him...

    Diatomaceous Earth

Would it help if I said that so far all of these plants are in pots on my back deck? They aren't in the garden area. Nothing but weeds are out there.

    Diatomaceous Earth

I tried that and it nearly killed my plants. Leaves got all crinkly and curly. That's why I am trying this stuff.

    Diatomaceous Earth

At this point there are no good guys. I have to kill these aphids and ants. BTW what about the white powder cover? Won't interfere with photosynthesis??

    Diatomaceous Earth

Found some more infected with aphids outside - and noticed some damn ants hanging around too. :( I finally got some plus a nice pump applicator. They told me at the garden center to spray mist the plant with water so it sticks. What I noticed is that the plants are white now. Won't this...

Freeze warnings up in New York state

it was officially 81 here today, but I don't think it really went over 74. if it did it didn't feel like it. besides, it's summer, it's supposed to be warm now. too cold at night for the plants. these things need heat. the reservoirs here are filled to capacity. I'm surrounded by them...

Freeze warnings up in New York state

Yeah I see this article this morning warning about the Greenland ice sheet melting and yet it's cold, had the coldest winter yet, and the solar cycle is at the lowest in decades....

    Many plants outside in pots

Well, he was a fat spider, and probably somewhat big for New Jersey on a cold night on May 31st, but probably a small little thing compared to ones you get down south or the ones our Aussie members often see. ;-)
