    Devv-2018-Loving life in the dirt

Sorry about the P. Dreadie, hopefully it recovers well enough. Everything else is looking pretty great. Any particular reason you've let those onions in the terra preta bed bloom?

    Sawyer 2019

I love the buzzards more than the £©∆∆¥π∆ whitetail deer. At least the buzzards provide a needed service, cleaning up the roadkill mayhem. Deer are worse-than-worthless, giant, ravenous rats that have wiped out several of my commercial crops over the years. Can't even eat the bastards anymore...

    Sawyer 2019

Just noticed the first hook in the pot of tepin seeds, planted 4/5. :woohoo:   This could get exciting over the next several days.   The tomatoes I planted in the 0% pepper pots a few days ago have popped up.  I now have oodles of Beefsteak, Mountain Gold, Pink Brandywine, and Fat Cherry.   Some...

seeds Any way I can sprout these old seeds?

I got a nominal improvement in germination using the method described in this post in Orekoc's glog: http://thehotpepper.com/topic/71197-orekocs-2019-grow/?p=1624254 I'm sure it's far from optimized, but it's a start. I think next time I try it I'll add a second H2O2 soak for 15 minutes just...

    Sawyer 2019

Except they did germinate; they were up and going great for a few days, then all but a few keeled over and died over just a day or two. But I suspect you're right about the mold. Composted fly, good; rotting fly, bad. Edit: The problem has been entirely restricted to that one 3.5" square...

    Sawyer 2019

Well, that's what I've been calling them; I just looked up what I planted last year and I think these are actually Jaloro. If that makes a difference. They won't be ready until May.

    Sawyer 2019

Thanks, Sandy. I think you're right, and that's about how frequently I look at them some days. Here's what I planted yesterday (811, if I added right), in no particular order: Seed aquired from others: Poblano - 25 Habanada - 25 Sugar Rush Peach - 25 Purple Bhut Jolokia - 8 White Habanero -...

    Orekoc's 2019 grow

I agree with CaneDog re burying stems. Peppers aren't tomatoes. I generally replant to the existing soil line, like one would plant a tree, maybe a little deeper for one with pronounced root-bumps. I think there is nothing special about Solo cups, unless it's the way they nest for the...

    Acidifying an acidic sauce?

I think I see what's going on. That link actually references a suggestion for acidifying tomatoes, too. Tomatoes do, in fact, vary right around pH 4.2, depending on variety. It seems like they're making a "better safe than sorry" recommendation for home canning where a pH meter may not always...

    Sawyer 2019

Cool!   Thanks, Scott. Average last frost date is either the 16th or the 21st (depending on where I look), and I'd rather have nightly lows at least up in the mid 40s. So for actual in-ground dirt day, maybe not until the first of May. I already have one potted OW back outside, a 3yo...

    Acidifying an acidic sauce?

I guess I missed that point. Do you have a link for that requirement? It's not obvious to me why it would matter if the acid came from a tomatillo as opposed to a tomato or lemon, as long as it's below the magic number.

    Acidifying an acidic sauce?

If it's stable at 3.9, you should be good to go with respect to the FDA. I think the magic number for them is 4.2. If a food is naturally below that number, no further acidification is required. If you do add something for the sole purpose of lowering the pH, then it becomes an "acidified...

    HillBilly Jeff's 2019 Glog

Plant more or root some suckers.  In my garden, disease usually slowly kills the plants before frost.  Starting some later might help with that, too.  Except I've just stuck with container growing the last few years.

    Sawyer 2019

Had to go count 'em anew. Sixty-seven. The right-most pot has 25/25 growing. Out of those 67 exactly one has a white stem; all the rest are purple.

    Sawyer 2019

Overdue for some pictures here. First up is a flat of mostly BBM: In the back three pots, left to right, are Primo, BMM, and CR.   This one is completely OS RBJ: The third row back and left-most pot in the fourth row were given a special treatment that boosted germination from 69% to 74%.   ...

Ah, okay. Well, plants can travel if you see something you like. I think I remember now some discussion about your family connection to NWA. You wouldn't recognize it these days. The growth and development have been phenomenal. Beaver Lake is the same, though. Is that where you went fishing?

    BrandonB's 2019 glog!!

Plants look pretty healthy to me. I wouldn't worry about a little bit of damage on older leaves. What do you think it is?

2019 Bringin' it back GLOG YAMracer754

Welcome back. Looking forward to seeing your grow. I'm trying to get it rolling again this year after no glog in 2017 and half-assing it last year. Speaking of rockwool cubes, I haven't used them for starting peppers, but I rooted some hops in some a few years ago. They worked great for...
