Anyone else grow their own garlic?

When is a good time to get your garlic in the ground? I'm watching my tomato plants start to give up the ghost and thinking that the bed would look lovely with onion and garlic and perhaps spinach over the winter - when should I start, and is there a good place to get garlic from (local nursery...

How to remove heat from the skin

Haven't tried green clay - I should check some stores for that.    I tried every "remedy" I could find on Google last Sunday and couldn't stop the pain. I felt like my hands were on fire and it kept me up all night! I really need to get gloves. The only thing that worked was a tube of sunburn...

    A couple of pepper-growing questions...

I can rule out 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 11. I'll look into 3, 8, and 10! You've convinced me - I'll look for those seeds next year instead of saving these! Plus it means I get to eat the peppers when I want and not wait for them to ripen (though I'm determined to let at least one get red..) :D

    Caribbeans?

I've never had a hab! I told my dad I was going to taste test (I just feel like I have to!) and he proceeded to tell me that he doesn't like the heat OR flavor of habs.

    Caribbeans?

All the sites I found seemed to say something along the lines of "Caribbean reds can also be scotch bonnets, which can also be habs" which I found extremely confusing. They can be, but they aren't always? Hm.   Thanks for the answers! Now I'm especially afraid to try them. Maybe I'll do it...

    Caribbeans?

I bought these as Caribbean Hot Peppers at a plant sale. The woman told me they weren't too hot - which I suppose is relative  Anyway, I googled Caribbean Hot Peppers and apparently they're also called Scotch Bonnets and some are habs. Needless to say, I was a bit confused (I don't know...

    A couple of pepper-growing questions...

I'm sure I have some pests hanging around (I've plucked quite a few tomato horn worms off of various plants...peppers and tomatoes) but the plant looks to be in pretty good shape (now that the deer has stopped munching on the leaves). I tried the pollination thing today - hopefully it'll work...

    food BREAKFAST!!!

These all look delicious!    I'll add my breakfast for dinner... Not spicy hashbrowns (with plenty of onion and butter...mmm), sliced Rose tomato, scrambled eggs with jalapeño and cheddar, pancake with dragon cayenne/cheddar/blueberries, and homemade dragon cayenne/cheddar biscuit. Not a great...

    A couple of pepper-growing questions...

Is there a good way to tell what's wrong, or should I find solutions for all the potential problems and try them one at a time? I doubt heat is the problem...We have 90+ days but tend to hover in the 80s with heavy humidity. Could be lack of pollination... I have no idea what nitrogen...

    A couple of pepper-growing questions...

I have a small crop of peppers, including my two jalapeño plants and one poblano plant. The jalapeños came from Home Depot and the poblano came from a plant/herb sale - so I thought for sure it would be good.   This is the first year I've tried poblano, so maybe it's just a slow developer and...

    lighting [ARTICLE] Light 101

Hmm... Interesting! I want to try growing indoors next year. I have a room that gets a lot of sun during the day, but I believe I'll need to supplement it a bit. I have two sunlamps leftover from my time as a frog/beardie mom - if I got new bulbs for these, would they work for indoor growing?

    photography Pet picture thread!

So many beautiful pets! I'm a dog person myself, but the cats are cute too ;)   I don't have any pets currently. I lost my 2 year 8 month rattie, Petyr Baelish, in May - his poor little body aged faster than his spirit. He was my little  buddy (my relationship with him was almost exactly like a...

    Hello from NC!

I'll have to look into that one! I'd love to have a hot sauce to put on stuff, but all the ones I've ever  tried (store bought - never occurred to me to make my own ) have all had a predominantly vinegar taste. Thanks for the suggestion! :D

Anyone else grow their own garlic?

I tried garlic this year and did it all wrong! Failed miserably (as did my onions - I harvested maybe 3 onions out of almost 100 planted in various locations! They all just...died). Lost most of them to rot, deer (she trod all over them and broke a couple), and my own impatience ("Well, it looks...

    Hello from NC!

Hi all! I don't know much about hot peppers but I love growing them. We always had a garden growing up and my dad always had rows and rows of hot pepper plants - chilies, jalapeños, hot bananas, and various other varieties. I've always been too chicken to eat anything but jalapeños. This year I...
