I have read that is because horses do not have the digestive system to kill the seeds they injest. Cows on the other hand do and as well the ability to break down the lignins (woody substances) in the things they eat.

Where did you hear that? Kelp can reach 175' or so. That's about halfway up a California Redwood. ;) With all the hassle of gathering it, rinsing it, etc I would rather just buy good brown kelp meal as it is the best.
