    indian chile

A lot my starts outpaced my overwinters this year. Getting a "head start" entails giving your overwinters enough light, space, and nutrients to thrive, otherwise their growth will slow to a crawl.

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

1000th post! Woo! I like the color change on the Tepin x Jalapeno. Takes a few days, it goes from green, to yellow-green, to burgundy orange, to burgundy, to vibrant red. Combined with the nice tanning, it'd make for a colorful display in full production mode. Ghosts... Mini Mini is...

    Pepper Reference

Thechileman database is definitely the most comprehensive quick reference... but a lot of empty entries as of yet. With the massive amount of peppers he has, you might also try Semillas la palma. Not all of it is translated (google can fix that for you), but it's probably one of the largest...

Florida Wild = Calusa Indian Mound = Grove Pepper

It certainly looks like a fun plant, but then, I tend to like anything with small pods...

seeds Anyone ever use lizard heating mats to start seeds?

Sticking them on top of the fridge in the back can also work pretty well. The thing to be careful about with the lizard heat mats is that not all of them have a temperature control, so it may take some moving seeds around in the tank or propping them up to get the right temperature. I fried one...

Pepper id. these were labeled datil

Yeah, not a Datil, the ribbing is atypical. Cross seems likely.

    vendor pepperlover.com

Man, that's some rotten luck... here I was thinking I was the king of crosses this year. In fairness, one of my five Yellow Brain Strain plants isn't true. I think it's a non-issue because I actually like the taste of the cross better, but it's best to be open and honest about these things...

    annuum Jalapeño crosses

Kind of citrusy, a bit of nuttiness... the ones I buy at the store are smoky but I imagine this is from the method of drying. First year I've grown them so I haven't had a chance to try them fresh.

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Mine are Peruvian too, specifically 'White Lightning' Habanero. Name sounded bogus to me, but even Vlad over at Rainbow Chili Seeds sells that particular cultivar, so I guess it's real... and appears to be similar to what I have. Of course, EVERY description I've found for them says 2" peppers...

    annuum Jalapeño crosses

I think I have a Tepin x Jalapeno going right now. Doesn't have much in the way of Jalapeno flavor though, more like a slightly larger, thicker pequin, since the heat is similar.

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

I think I actually prefer the taste of the cross to the yellow brain strain... much fruitier (with almost sweet, honey-like notes), hard to judge on heat because they're both pretty absurd. Through careful empirical analysis I've concluded it takes about 6 yellow brain strains to get the same...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

The plants have been small too with the Jalapenos, so I expect the later pods to be a bit better. Last year I grew Early Jalapenos and they did great, perfect size for poppers in my opinion... bigger isn't always better (I'm lactose intolerant, so the less stuffing per pepper the better off I'll...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Another day, another harvest... sheesh. I need to grow fewer small-podded varieties next time. Upper left green are serranos, upper right green are Jals... they're awfully small, but they taste right. Some of them started turning red so I know they're mature. Ah well. I might just not be able to...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

We got our first good rain in weeks yesterday, and it looks like we're getting more today... woo! Of course, it was a mixed blessing, as it rinsed all of my superhot solution off my plants and the deer swooped in and mowed down the beans and squash again. :( Kind of annoying. As much as I...

STC3248, Just Another Grow Log! Holiday Harvest!

I agree about the Big Jims... I'm about to do some chile rellenos, I'll be growing more of these guys in the future. Garden is looking great.

reliable organic seed vendor largest variety, best prices

My standby for all things not pepper related (though they are starting to get some peppers) is Horizon Herbs. Their user interface is horribly awkward if you're just browsing, but they have a ridiculous selection of things I didn't even know existed. Organic, non-GMO (including corn and...

breeding Child of Trinidad (BS Yellow cross?)

Any of the Trinidad bunch are likely culprits... seed came straight from Judy, so there are a lot of fun potentials there. I won't pretend to know much about the Trinidads aside from their notoriety.

    What plant defeats you?

This year it has been the basils... even the Thai are looking sad. Well, okay, my Lemon basil is going nuts, but other than that... Deer also keep mowing down my squash and cucumbers. They don't touch the fruit, just the leaves. Bugs the hell out of me. I've been spraying them with a superhot...

breeding Child of Trinidad (BS Yellow cross?)

I've been watching one of my BS Yellow plants as it has been looking a bit different than the rest, specifically, the pods looked a bit off and I've been waiting to see if it would ripen to a color other than yellow. Sure enough... my initial impression is creamsicle. I left it on the plant...
