    Stickman's other 2012 garden

I'm in awe of the Eggplant... I've never gotten mine to look that good. Granted, the flea beetles usually do a number on them, so that doesn't help...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Day wilt is the main issue I've noticed with the baccatums I've grown, pod set hasn't been a problem quite so much. I seem to have lucked out and chosen chinense varieties that set well regardless (Limon, White Habanero, Wiri Wiri, and Datils in particular seem to be completely indifferent to...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Haha, like, 12 total. This is with me shaking them on a daily basis and hand pollinating a few. I just haven't had much luck with pubescens thus far. There's a pepper grower locally that just had a bemused look on his face when I told him I was growing Rocotos. Apparently this is a terrible...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

I'd just watch them. The impact on baccatums is minimal, but I've noticed they tend to be more sensitive to high temperatures than say, annum or chinense. I can't imagine you having issues in Oregon, it's persistent high temperatures that pubescens can't deal with- our heat index will be in the...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Don't get me wrong, they do fine in sun. It's just it gets so hot here the only hope I have of setting pods is getting some shade on them. (And really, nothing does well when the temps get above 100, but the baccatums and pubescens seem to take it worst...)

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Just popped the first ripe Tepin x Jalapeno off the plant, a bit rounder than the rest. Since I knew this pod wasn't isolated, I just popped it in my mouth. Strange medium burn that focused on the tip of my tongue and moved forward to my lips, but not nearly as hot as I was expecting with a...

Please help I.D. this Pepper Sold to me as "Boomba" at the Farmer's Market.

That'd be my guess... looks like one of the pubescent c. annums, there are several. Hard to say before we see pods. Nice looking plant in any event, that thing should be a beast later in the season.

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

I had the Rocotos in that spot last year, it got so hot in the summer I figured it was the only way to have any hope of getting pods off them... still didn't help, oh well. Nice thing about that location is since the walls are white it gets a bit of ambient light, which helps immensely. Plants...

baccatum What is your best tasting Baccatum?

I love having Aji Amarillo as it makes for an excellent condiment. Very unique flavor and a must if you want to try Peruvian food. I'm also growing Aji Habaneros, which are similar to the Criolla Sella, with a nice crisp texture and the typical baccatum floral/fruity aroma and flavor. Can't...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Yeah, I did Tabascos last year but they didn't survive winter... user error. Ah well. This has been a fun experiment with the Aji Habaneros. The ones I planted in shade (as in, they get maybe an hour of morning sun) are finally hitting their stride, growth is lush and pods are setting like...

    Semillas La Palma 2012

Happy hunting. (I need to stop looking on there, my planned grow for next year is already getting ridiculously bloated...) I like your setup, incidentally. Interesting idea keeping them isolated by spacing with pubescens and screens... makes sense.

seeds Can I start seeds year round?

I started some seeds in early July last year that got overwintered for this year, and I also started some of my more compact varieties in late December for the heck of it. You can start seeds any time, it's just a matter of how much space you're willing to devote to overwinters. Overwintering...

    REDTAIL's 2012 GROWLOG

Nice looking plants. I imagine the Rocotos do better in PA than they do out here. It's already too hot for them to set pods... plants still look nice though.

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Thanks, Paul. Yeah, I'm looking forward to more fresh Brains... Wandered around the yard tonight and found this little guy hanging out on the Dragon Fruit: One of my late starts, Prik ki nu. Can't for the life of me remember where I got the seed from. I think it's a frutescens, if not my...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

The couple ripe pods I've had are similar to most chinense in terms of flavor, but there's something unique about them that I can't quite put my finger on. I like them better than most chinense I've tried, but honestly, I hate chinense flavor on its own, so I'm not a good judge of these things.

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Few pod pics since it's a beautiful day. I've been wanting and waiting for the Rocoto to set more pods in this cool weather, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen... I'll probably have a repeat of last year, where the plants grew huge and set dozens of pods come fall that didn't quite...

    Semillas La Palma 2012

Just ordered a few more seeds from you because I can't control myself... looking forward to seeing that monster list's progress.

    seeds Germinating Bird Seed Peppers

My housemate has parrots... I've been tempted to feed them some peppers for germination purposes. Really, I think it's mainly the warmth, moisture, and abrasive action of the gut that lead to better germination, so if you can duplicate these you shouldn't have any problems.

They sure are a resilient plant. On the topic, this may interest you: c. flexuosum crossing experiment. Kind of what piqued my interest in the first place. I'll be interested to see what they make of it. I'll probably put out a request for seeds later in the season, so don't be surprised if I...

STC3248, Just Another Grow Log! Holiday Harvest!

Now whenever I buy plants from a nursery, I like to keep them in solitary confinement for about a week before planting them just to see if anything rears its head. Last year I had some leaf spot issues that started from one of my Hirts peppers and spread to the entire garden, most of the plants...
