    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2016

This is around late July.  Starting to get some good peppers.  My starfish really did well this year     Had this crazy double Starfish growing off the same stem.     My first 7 Pod White!       Early August.  The raised bed looks pretty good.  My Guatemalan Red Rocoto really took over the...

    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2016

Thanks!  I've been a total slacker on getting anything posted this year.   Thanks Jim.  This was by far the best harvest I've ever had.  Getting them in a greenhouse early seemed to do the trick.  We'll see if that works next year, or if it was just a fluke

    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2016

I haven't posted much this year, but it doesn't mean I didn't grow peppers!  (just been super busy).  So here is my 2016 pepper story told with images   This is sometime in March.  I had really poor luck with germination this year.  Probably 1/5 of my seeds either didn't germinate or died within...

    Garlic in your sauce?

Ha!  I'm the same way.  Grow 100-120 head of garlic each year, and probably 80% of it goes into sauces

    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2016

You know, I really don't know.  I'm kind'a perplexed.  I prepped the seeds by soaking them overnight in water, and then promptly forgot about them and planted them the next day.  So they were in water for almost 2 days.  That might be too long.  I'm prepping/germinating my cayenne and jalapeno...

    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2016

How's everyone's plants doing so far this year?  I had pretty bad germination rates this year, 58% of my seeds germinated.   I'm starting my cayennes and cracked jalapenos today.  Going with triple redundancy this time

    Turbo 2016 Pepper Growing

Well, I got pretty crappy germination rates on my seeds this year: 58% And it didn't help that I went one day too long before watering and found half of them all wilty.  They recovered once I watered them, but some of the starts have crumpled up leaves.  We'll see how it goes.  C.flexuosum - 0/4...

Turbo's Slog (Hot Sauce Log with a silent H)

Yea yea, not a sauce I know.  But I was pretty proud of this one tonight.  Did a flank steak with a pineapple Jamaican Jerk teriyaki marinade...and it was AWESOME!!!   Ok for the marinade: 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/3 cup Japanese Mirin (you can get this in any Asian grocery store) 1/2 cup Japanese...

    Turbo 2016 Pepper Growing

Thanks everyone!  Here's to a good 2016 grow season for all.   January 12: Started soaking the seeds for 24 hours   January 14: Oops, was supposed to plant seeds yesterday...oh well.  12 hours extra in water shouldn't hurt(?)   Last year I used peat pellets to start my seeds in.  They are super...

    Ripening temps

Thats plenty warm for them to ripen.  Have patience.  If you get a bit antsy, you might pick a couple and put them in a paper bag with a banana.  Check on them evey few days

Variety you are most excited about for 2016

I'm trying a couple new varieties this year for the first time.  I've got 2 rotocos and a couple of supers, but the one I'm most excited about is 7 Pod White.  My main goal for 2016 is to come up with a tasty white hot sauce recipe.

    Turbo 2016 Pepper Growing

State of the Garden Address (2015 / 2016) In 2015 I decided to experiment with a bunch of new peppers I’d never tried before.  Some I liked and some I won’t be growing again.  About half the plants I grew were staple ones that I grow every year.  Here is a breakdown of my thoughts on each from...

raised-bed Raised beds and plant spacing

I've got two 8' x 3' x 18" raised beds.  I space the plants about 16" apart on the X axis, and offset each plant by about 6" on the Y axis (shown below).  This has worked out pretty well for me.  The plants don't get too crowded, and it's easy to maintain and harvest pods.  Two years ago I grew...

    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2016

A few more than last year.  24 plants in the raised beds, same as last year.  24 plants seem just about perfect for me.  I'm gonna put 4 cayennes and 4 jalapenos in buckets though.  I can never seem to get enough of those :)   What about you?  More or less than last year?

    fermenting Vinegar VS ferment

I'll chime in a bit to what other people have said.  For me it's all about the flavor I'm looking for in the sauce.  I personally love vinegar.  Not white vinegar mind you...too strong, no flavor...bleh!  But all the other kinds of vinegar I love and often sip with a spoon.  Some of my favorites...

Woohoo 2016!!!!  Glad to see the new PNW Glog up and running   I just finalized my 2016 list and put in an order at pepper lovers for the seeds I didn't have.  Most are tried and true for me, but about a third are gonna be new for me to grow.    C.flexuosum (2) Aji Cito (1) Aji Peruvian (1) Aji...
