Turbo 2015 Pepper Growing: Keeping It Simple (Stupid)

Whats this plant?  Its an Aji Pineapple Lemon Cito!  These three plants were in my shady raised bed, which this late in the season only gets about 2 hours of actual sun.  They haven't given me a ripe pod in about 3 weeks.  So I pulled all three out of the ground, transplanted into the same...

Turbo 2015 Pepper Growing: Keeping It Simple (Stupid)

Thanks Runescape!  I haven't tried any from this batch.  Was thinking about doing a small batch of MOA only sauce.   The Aji Pancas were a disappointment.  I only got two peppers off the plant and they didn't taste all that interesting.   Thanks Trident!  I really am.  Last year someone gifted...

    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2015

Summer's not over yet my friends.  Well, at least my peppers don't think so.  The plants in my hoop house are still putting out ripe pods and this bunch is from a MOA I moved indoors and set under my grow light.

Turbo 2015 Pepper Growing: Keeping It Simple (Stupid)

Its working pretty well, though slower than I want.  Two days ago it was 71F and sunny outside, and 101F and really humid inside the hoop house.  I've been pulling 4-5 pods ever few days.  But I just looked in today and and are dozens that are starting to turn color.  Hopefully in a week or...

Turbo's Slog (Hot Sauce Log with a silent H)

South American Pineapple Sauce   I really liked my Aji Cito and Aji Peruvian peppers.  They are really sweet, kind'a cherry like in flavor, and a nice medium cayenne like heat.  I thought they might be really good in a sauce with grilled pineapple.   Ingredients 50'ish Aji Cito, Aji Peruvian...

Turbo's Slog (Hot Sauce Log with a silent H)

Thanks for the compliment Winland!  I wanna say I started with 1 cup of vinegar, the after hitting it with the immersion blender I may have added a bit more to get the desired consistency.  That's kinda my SOP for sauces.  Start with enough vinegar to just barely cover the peppers in the pot. ...

Turbo's Slog (Hot Sauce Log with a silent H)

The heating element went out.  I could have purchased a new element, but it was 1/3 the price of a new smoker, so I decided to just get a new one.

Making hot sauce with frozen pods

Freezing pods wont affect the flavor of the sauce at all.  I actually freeze all my pods before sauce making, even if they are fresh at the time I'm gonna cook up a sauce.  Freezing seems to break down the cell walls of the peppers, and I find I get a much smoother, thicker sauce that doesn't...

    Fatalii pineapple mango questions

Vinegar is fine, but with that mix I'd go with white wine vinegar instead.  I find it a bit more mild in flavor so the other ingredients shine through.   But thats just me.  Also with that much fruit, you might hold off on adding any sugar until after you cook the sauce down a bit.  It might be...

Turbo's Slog (Hot Sauce Log with a silent H)

I was smoking some cayennes for one of my favorite sauces yesterday and our 40 year old Little Chief Smoker finally died.    Say hello to my new Big Chief Smoker.  Here is to another good 40 years of smoking stuff!

Turbo 2015 Pepper Growing: Keeping It Simple (Stupid)

I've got a ton for green pods on my plants, but the night time temps in the lower 50's and day time highs in the mid 60's.  So decided to put up the hoop house to see if I could create a warmer environment that the pods might ripen in.   Just checked the temps is its a humid 91F inside, and 62F...

    Chocolate Habanero?

Cheap they were not.  $14 / pound.  But 3 pods only cost me $1.  I've been letting them ripen up a bit.  If I like them I'm planning on going back and buying a bunch...and saving some seeds

    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2015

I'll probably give them another couple of weeks before I start transplanting them.  Just trying to plan the end of the season.  I'd also like to have another go at bonchi again.  Aphids just overtook my bonchi last year and destroyed them.  Hopefully I'll do a better job of de-pesting my plants...

    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2015

Its been dead in here, so I thought I'd liven things up a bit.  The season isn't over yet folks!   My plants did a late season growth spurt during Sept and doubled in bushy volume.  They are packed with green pods.  I think I'm gonna take a stab at trimming them back, keeping only the branches...
