hybrid You called your cross what ?

Hi All,   Well, it's Sunday night and work tomorrow so time to think of something of greater interest ...   In my opinion, sometimes the name allocated to a cross can be fairly easy to guess or it's self-explanatory (maybe).   Some that come to my mind are:   7 Pot Lava (descriptive I'm sure...

seeds seed orientation and correlation with failure ?

Hi Harry,   Have been using jiffy pellets until my experiments this year - and the pellets are where all my "helmet wearers" have come from.   I'm playing around now with a blend of Miracle Grow Orchid Mix and Osmocote Seed Raising mix - 90% from the bottom up is plain orchid mix, and the top...

seeds seed orientation and correlation with failure ?

Hey Sarge - love that description. Two things come to mind - 1) Darth Vader, and 2) I really shouldn't mention here ....  classic !   Also, thanks Ed, but I must admit I have been sowing alot more shallow than that for fear of rot.   Regards,   Tim

seeds seed orientation and correlation with failure ?

Thanks Browning.   Perhaps then I am sowing them too shallow, i.e. too close to the surface which means when it dries out (in my heated propagator), the seed dries out.   I think I have had more failures from sowing too deep though.   As with most things, it's finding the "middle ground' I guess :)

seeds seed orientation and correlation with failure ?

Hi All,   Sometimes my seeds will germinate and manage to poke 3 or 4mm above the soil line, but the seed case stays on.   Despite my efforts to help soften the case so it can come off by itself, this doesn't seem to happen, and the seedling stops growing.   So, when manually removing the seed...

How would you like to own shares in Boeing ?

Hi all,   Does anyone else have an interest in commercial aviation ?   Have been following all this Boeing versus Airbus stuff for some time now, and GE versus Rolls Royce for the engine side of things (let's forget P&W for now ...)   I wonder if Boeing will get enough profit out of their recent...

seeds mother nature and germination - surprise surprise

Hi All,   A simple question:   How many of you use jiffy pellets, or little plastic pots (or whatever) and sow more than one seed in each?   If that's you, read on...   You wait for the prescribed period, but only one seedling. Oh well, tough luck you think.   Since you couldn't be bothered...

    Now it is officially official.

I like the way the certificate says the hottest chilli "is" ....   In my mind, that wording means all pods of that type of chilli are hotter than everything else since it's such an *absolute* statement.   Let's reread the above: in MY mind. No doubt many others will differ in opinion and that's...

    vendor pepperlover.com

That's right up there with the most level headed and polite comments I have read on this forum so far.   I don't know how many times I have read people say there's been a problem, then whammo, replacement of all sorts of goodies in short order.   Vendors don't have to do that, but some do, and...

fertilizer Fertilizer advice - How many types do you need?

G'Day Sarge,   I use Seasol (it's a tonic only) plus Powerfeed together as a mix for every 2 out of 3 feeds (where the other I use is Thrive).   But, when you really want to give 'em some oomph, I recommend Yates Blood'n'Bone professional.   My plants have come up so lush with it that it's hard...

hot-sauce Does anyone still use Tabasco sauce?

Yes indeed !   Well, the green, chipotle and garlic type anyway (the latter being my favourite source, just a notch above Green Ghost).   Swing a miss on the original and habanero types though.   Do they sell litre bottles ;)

    Flowering False Cactus?

Yes indeed - Nigel is correct. It's a Euphorbia.   Some of them are fantastically drought resistent and ideal for south Australia, but the sap is poisonous too ...   The current rage in our nuseries is Euphorbia "lipstick" - nothing like yours though.

    Anyone grow Fennel?

I planted Fennel earlier this year and found it grew nice and fat when I put a number in together, but those in isolation didn't fare so well. Thus, as Nigel has suggested, soil temp may have significance, i.e. close together = shading of their respective bases and root systems.   Regards,   Tim

seed giveaway to help with ID (Aussie's only I'm afraid)

If they are nothing special, so be it.   I myself wasn't sure since I could only find out about congo's being brown/chocolate.   Anyway, the offer still stands :P

tiny worm like pest in jiffy pellets ?

Spot on SanPatricio - the larval pictures from the web say it all.   I suppose for small time growers like myself it's a big risk since they can reduce the germination count by a non-trivial percentage.   It so happens that this year I'm using a blend containing Orchid mix, my own (hand ground...

seed giveaway to help with ID (Aussie's only I'm afraid)

Hi All,   I have an offer for the Aussie members of this forum.   I have seed to give away, but for the moment, I'll restrict the offer to the first three who would like to receive.   The background:   The seed is from a congo habanero plant that actually produced red pods. I'm not sure why or...

How to mess with you neighbor? (after he sends cops for growing under HPS)

Having neighbour troubles as well, I too dream of doing certain things, but need to reinforce that many suggestions here will land you in the proverbial.   Can I suggest something of a very effective nature, and perhaps something enjoyable if you give it a chance ?   Get yourself a classical...

I know it's not much, but pictures of the chilli together with the name on the label in the seed packets is a professional touch.   Would love to add my name to the list of satisfied customers, but, damn Australian customs.   What's worse is that the 7 pots are my favourite so I know I'm missing...

tiny worm like pest in jiffy pellets ?

Hi All,   I've just remembered to ask a question about tiny worm like pests that are sometimes found in my jiffy pellets.   More often than not, I find them when I dig out seeds that haven't germinated in a few weeks, and it appears as though these nasties have been eating the innards of them.  ...

Neighbours with some sort of issue

The idea of using TSM power is noted, especially given said neighbour leaves their kitchen window open pretty much all the time, i.e. even when they have left for the night.   But, that would be all the circumstantial evidence the neighbour needs to poke a finger squarely back at me and claim...
