    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

No real reason to update, but I'm taking a break from work so this seemed like a good excuse. I checked the plants the other day and found my own personal army of assassin bug nymphs standing guard on the Wiri Wiri. I may have another weird cross/mutation on my hands. My one Datil start for...

any pics of a dead pepper plant?

+1 Never, ever get rid of anything you want refunded, even perishables. You have to see it from their perspective, there are plenty of people out there that will try to take advantage of return policies. Some sellers care enough about their reputation that they will replace items no questions...

    White Habs

I second that idea... I've never had any issues, but I grow from my own seed and I make sure I leave them on the plant long enough that I can tell that they are obviously ripe. If I'm just picking them to eat, I'll often find bits of green still on the pods. In the afternoon sun it can be hard...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

In your defense, I really like the plant I'm calling a small strain Aji Amarillo... the flavor is similar, and the plant is a (relatively) early and heavy producer. I didn't need to start those seeds in January... and this heat has been a boon to all of the peppers growth. I'm hoping I find my...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

I think I'm zone 6b... and we had a *very* mild winter. I planted some lettuce in the fall that survived without protection all the way to bolting about a month ago, so I've had a very early start on this year's season.

I love me some Thai basil... my housemate introduced me to it last year. This year I'm also trying some Thai Holy Basil, though I've never encountered it before so I'm curious to see what it's like. I've been meaning to order some seeds off http://www.simply-thai.com/, I ordered some...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Thanks! Yeah, I'm definitely going to try doing more overwinters this year if I can manage it, though I may be moving at some point so it'll be a little awkward... but that Datil stayed by a south-facing window at the office in a 5-inch pot for close to 4 months this winter. Overwintering...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

I keep telling my friends they should be glad I'm nice, with this arsenal on my hands. I'm not really the machisimo sort, so I might try a part of one at some point, but since the heat makes it difficult to appreciate the flavor I prefer to mix it in with something else. I respect the nuts out...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

I can't resist a little pornage. What's this? A ripe pod on my Datil? More to come... Second Cumari plant beginning to flower I'm starting to wonder if one of my Mini Minis isn't a Mini Mini, or a cross. This one has longer leaves, slightly plumper pods, and doesn't have the stem darkening...

    Wiri Wiri

Since this topic has been revived, I got my Wiri Wiri seed from smokemaster and the plants are doing well, looking to be extremely bushy and I can see what they say about the pods hiding under the leaves. Curious to see how they taste. For anyone interested, I'll make it a point to have seed...

Plant IDs from around the yard

Sounds like quite the experience... the plants don't look particularly sturdy, I keep waiting for this branch to finally snap off in a good storm, hasn't happened yet... Didn't realize the plants were dioecious. All of the trees in my yard must be female. This time of year it rains black bird...

Plant IDs from around the yard

Oh sorry, I should probably make it clear that the berries are in fact on a tree, probably about 30 feet tall, this is just a very low hanging branch... annoyingly low really, easy access but it makes mowing the lawn rather annoying. I tried a few, nice sweet flavor. Good to have confirmation...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

It's been damn hot the last couple of days. The plants love it, but I've needed to provide water to many of the plants at the end of the day. Somehow I think this summer may be murder... I apologize for the quality of these photos, my cheap camera functions just fine except under lower light...

Plant IDs from around the yard

It's times like these I am reminded of how woefully ignorant I am as far as plants are concerned. I was wandering around the yard and noted some interesting looking plants that I am more or less clueless about. Plant 1: Growing along the boundary between my neighbor's property and mine, I...

    Bushy or lanky?

Mine tend to bush out with no intervention... Nature isn't stupid, I think a plant under good conditions will produce as many pods as it is capable of producing. It may be that pod production is increased over the short term by topping, but I'm not convinced it would matter in the long run.

health Only 4 spots left, but still have 10 plants... what to plant?

That sounds shockingly similar to my situation, including the varieties. I plan on just finding space for them. Even if they're overcrowded, some peppers are better than no peppers... personally, I don't see a harm in keeping the wilds in pots for their first year. My Mini Minis were neglected...

    vendor Hirts Gardens (ebay hirtsgardens)

It looks like a chinense, but there have been just as many people complaining that the Bhuts turned out to be normal red Habaneros. Pretty much any plant you buy from them should be treated as a mystery pepper unless you go with one of the more common varieties. Last year I bought White Habs...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Thanks, I'm almost through the antbiotics, so this should be the end of it. There's always next year. I swear I must have dozens of varieties I want to start after looking through the glogs... however, the Datil is highly recommended. Bushy plant, super prolific, heat similar to most habaneros...
