Summer 2015 Forecast Much of U.S. Below-Average Temperatures

So even hotter and wetter in Florida than usual this summer... fantastic. It has definitely been nearly off-the-charts hot all through April and May. I think may we have only had two or three days below 90/70.

First Attempt to grow peppers glog

It looks good to me. One nice big leaf to kickstart photosynthesis, and the small leaves look happy. It will likely grow shorter and squatter due to where the stem broke, and be slower to produce.

pests My first "Pest ID" question so be nice...

Mealybugs. That is the sticky white crap which they use as housing. Physically scrub them off with an old toothbrush, then spray after the sun goes down with neem oil.

pests My first "Pest ID" question so be nice...

Does look like mealybugs to me. Some of the palm trees down here get them.

What do you use for mulch?

Pine bark nuggets, even in my pots. I like the smell.

shade Shade Cloth for Mature Plants

This is my first year using the shade cloth. It has been a tremendous success. The sun and heat is brutal down here, so mature plants would continually wilt throughout the day over the past few years. Bell peppers would barely set fruit, and forget about tomatoes during the summer. The plants...

hydroponic Growing peppers hydroponically Need Help!

Sorry, I did not pay close enough attention. What I meant was that when the roots are exposed to purely water+nutrients with no dirt involved, the algae may be a problem. In your setup, if the algae persists, then soil may be too wet for too long.

shade Suchen's leaning tower of shade

Are these lemon drops just very pubescent, or do I have something like spider mites?     Darn, the compression wrecked the quality on those. Can you all see the white hairs especially following the midrib of the leaves?

How strong is the sun in your area? Do you have high UVB-output bulbs?

hydroponic Growing peppers hydroponically Need Help!

Algae is only really a concern in hydroponics I think. Then it is actively competing with the roots and can grow thicker. On the surface of the dirt, if you let it dry out pretty well for several days it will go away.   How are the DWC plants looking?

    Leaf Discoloration..... Newby

Wait until after the last projected date of frost in your area, then slowly move the plants outside letting them get longer sunlight each day. Start with 1 hour a day, then 2, then 3, etc until they are exposed to full sun for 8 our so hours a day.   In my area this works in Feb/March, but...

    where can I find neem??

To answer your question, no. Spraying any oil or surfactant on the plants while the sun is out is asking for your plants to be completely roasted. What until the sun has gone behind the trees/buildings or do it 4ish hours before the sun is up high enough to shine on your plants. If they are...

Yellow Patches / Splotches - Disease v.s. Deficiency?

Perhaps you are trying to overcorrect? Maybe just water with regular water for a few weeks.

I think I was miss sold seads

I ordered Bolivian rainbow seeds from Pepper Joe, but received aji omnicolor instead. I was looking for the ornamental value of the purple flowers and foliage, and got neither of those. Other than that his seeds were good quality.

shade Suchen's leaning tower of shade

I am up near the University of South Florida. The shade cloth is 30%, but I actually have it doubled over. You are right about the summer sun, it is just brutal here. I have not had BER problems. I add dolomite to the soil and occassionally use a bottle of CalMag+ if I am feeling it now and...

shade Suchen's leaning tower of shade

Figured I would share my setup here since I am far too lazy to keep a true grow log updated. The shade cloth tent has quite the tilt to it, but even in the 30+mph winds and torrential downpours we have had in the last week it has never gone down or pulled apart. The whole patio slopes downward...

    soil Lowering soil pH.

We actually use aluminum sulfate at work to restore hyper nutrient-rich ponds and lakes for that very reason.
