I only use the Promix HP. Have not tried the basic mix. I would add 25% perlite to it, then whatever fertilizers, and some dolomite lime and away you go!
A friend of mine has a bit of a brown thumb when it comes to growing most things, but her brazilian starfish has nice bulbous pods set just waiting to ripen already! Great little plant it seems. May have to snag some seeds from her.
Great observation. I usually fill half the pot/bucket and water that a bit, then add the rest of the mix and water again. This helps ensure a thoroughly wet mix without having to absolutely drench the soil. I will typically use my hand to mix the soil for even wetness before planting. Sometimes...
That is not leaf miner damage. They leave white trails through the leaf. My tomatoes are smothered with them. It is mostly aesthetic damage when leaf miners attack.
The hot pepper bed at Epcot (near the Mexico section) did something very similar which I really liked. Even if the plants get gigantic and bushy and crowded you still have the easy visibility year after year.
Soil looks too wet and compact. This can cause all sorts of misleading symptoms. Potting soil is cheap enough at any big box store that sells it. Even basic bottom shelf potting soil is likely to save your plants from a gruesome death.
In soil that dense, it probably stays wet for a long time...
Have you considered shade cloth to keep screaming summer temps down? I find hot pepper production suffers a bit, but I am hoping my set up will keep the more sensitive tomatoes flowering/setting fruit into July at least.
I used 1/4 the recommended dose of Grow Big, but added at every watering (every 3-4 days now)for the first several weeks after they went outside. Plants are anecdotally much bigger and bushier, but I changed too many variables to say whether the 1/4 strength ferts are helping.
Looking good! I do sometimes miss the perfect beauty of the big, deep green indoor leaves. Then I remember that pods won't form for me until they go outside and get ugly with holes and wrinkles, bumps and bruises
I use 16oz red plastic cups every year. The only time I had an overwatering issue was when the soil mix held too much water. Several people have reported success with clear cups, and some prefer them as you can visually inspect the water needs in each cup.
How often and how thoroughly do you water? I have noticed similar conditions when I potted up my bhut into a 15gal pot and it subsequently got inundated with torrential rain. The root zone still has not dried two weeks later.
