the ones planted out are foot tall bushes most of them allready, they should be able to handle a few bugs :) im more worried about the heat we have this year. we are allready having temps above 100ºf during the afternoon.
i use a lot of marcona almond wood. its a typical regional almond variety here in south spain. gives a nice flavour. although i mix it often with a bit of various others fruit-tree woods and sometimes olive and oak too.
:) i learnt a really nice and tasty refried bean recipe when i were in nicaragua. the cook in the hostel was cuban - his recipe used only white or pink beans well mashed up, cream and some fresh cheese, salt and spice to taste. simple and very good to serve on the side of any tortilla/nacho meal.

the guindilla de navarra i didnt keep seeds off - but i do have a bunch of dried pods. i dry the pods in an oven on low heat setting - so with luck the seeds might be viable still...
