    What's the best way?

I used BT in liquid form which they sell at Home Depot for about 6 bucks. Perfectly safe for the plants and beneficial inscets and very effective.

Might be over before I've started

Tell her that if your hobby becomes hanging out till 3am getting lap dances in a strip club or playing poker in a casino and drinking, you'll stop. But if your hobby is sitting in the backyard watering a pepper plant, she's just gonna have to live with it. What is she going to do? Complain to...

    Controlling Beetles

I got hit with them one year. Not fun. You can see them in the mornings before it gets hot. Lots of do it yourself sprays with garlic, onion and pepper mash. You can go with a neem oil or insecticidal soap, but you may have to bite the bullet and go with one of the nasty ones like ortho or bayer.

    seeds Germination question on soil

I try not to make it too soggy, since the dome will keep it moist. I fill the tray up to about 1cm below the top and then mist it to get it pretty moist. Then I lay the seed on top and cover with the last cm of soil. Then mist that until it gets moist. That way there is moist soil both above and...

    seeds Germination question on soil

Even though everyone thinks its blah, I tried a 75:25 mix of Miracle Grow Organic Choice and Miracle Grow seed starter. Had great germination results. The Fox Farms Light Warrior is a favorite amongst the weed guys.

    Compost in your pots

I use some Black Kow compost as a top dressing to my soil just because I'd like it to hold a little more water. Havent tried the mushroom or chicken composts yet. Fifty pound bag for five bucks, so you can beat the price.

    Transplanting w/photos

Looks like a perfect transplant and plant will do great. You may have even been able to go another couple weeks before potting up. I throw mine in full shade or bring them indoors for a day or two after transplanting just to minimize stress. Once the roots get back on track, then back out in the...

What fertilzers are your choice ferts ?

Always interested in what everyone else does. Me: Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil with a little Black Kow compost on top. Botanicare Liquid Karma and Pro Grow for first 5 weeks. Liquid Karma with Pro Bloom each week thereafter. Very happy so far. (Thanks AJ.) Used Fox Farms Grow Big, Big Bloom and...

    pests Little white bugs

I just saw a few the other day. I'm trying Organocide which I bought at a local nursery, but you can also get at Home Depot or Lowes. Trying it on the recommendation of a long time grower who used it with good results. It's organic and I'm trying to avoid use of the real nasty pesticides. It's...

Had to be rushed to ER

I had one in 2004. Worst pain ever. Like a knife jammed in your side for three hours followed by a kick in the groin for another three hours. Passed a piece of it in the ER, but the remainder was 1 cm and still in kidney. Had it blasted and gone a day later. Just like AJ said- like peeing kidney...

2010 charlesNYC's Grow Log AKA My Ugly Little Fire Escape

Definitely have to lose the cans and the clear containers. Your roots will cook when they start to wrap around the sides. You should probably be able to get some 4-5 inch azalea pots for less than a buck a piece. Drill an extra 1/4 inch hole in them and you can aid drainage. I have seven week...

Only my douglahs are looking bad

Man that's alot of leaves. And nice color. Nice job getting them back. And I agree with above- Douglahs are "grumpy" sometimes and never seem to be in sync with the rest of my plants. I grew some a while back and they were a pain.

At what temp does the blossom drop kick in?

Welcome to my world, mega. Hot and humid with a good chance of even more hot and more humid. Those temps wont harm the plant assuming you keep them watered. I give mine a nice soak in the morning and about two hours before sunset. If your night temps are over 75 or so, it will be tough to...

    Compost sock?

On the Black Kow compost website, they have a DIY video of a similar project for planting two tomato plants. You basically lay down a 50lb bag of compost and cut two slits in it about 18 inches apart and transplant two tomato plants in there. Not the most attractive thing in the world, but it...

seeds First germination try...what do you think about this

Guess it depends on how often you'll use it and what time of season. You can get a 72 seed tray and dome at home depot or lowes for under 10 bucks, but not heated. Doesnt seem like any of those trays are very durable, though. But even if you bought one for 20 bucks plus shipping and it lasted...

    New grower question..

Crazy, potawie and mega are all right. There are lots of commercial growers here in south and central Florida that grow year round and ship up to the northern parts of the US. I represented a commercial grower down here that grew annuals and flowering shrubs and shipped them directly to Illinois...
