    Potato question

I found a few spud volunteers coming up in my compost pile. I decided about a month ago to just let the plants that come up that do because I want to see what they are. So far I have spuds, tomatoes and some type of squash. My question is, what are the white spots on this tater? They look like...

    greenhouse Green houses not?

Time to put the wagons in a circle. Greenhouses are necessary but they sure are nice to have. If you have the room, that is. This year I've grown everything on the concrete pad in front of the garage. However, this has caused me to loose close to 600 plants from hail, 60mph winds in storms...

greenhouse A couple of Greenhouse questions

Look for one of these books. They can be found on Amazon for cheap and a just about the standard books to have for greenhouse growers. Not a lot has changed in the industry over the last 30 years so you don't need to have the latest book to be current. Greenhouse Engineering Ball Red Book Vol...

    Stuck in mobile mode! HELP!!!!

I've been stuck in mobile mode as well for about a month. I clear history and cache a few times a day already so I doubt that is a problem. Hopping in circles only helped to make a few boards squeaky and loose. I am using a Droid 2. Edit: I tried the trick of going into chat and then click...

seeds How hot is too hot for seed germination?

95F is not too hot but it is at the upper range for having a decent percentage of germination. Capsicum seeds can germinate as low as 70F but will also have a lower germination rate. If you already have one seed to germinate in the bag, I would put them all in your starter mix.

    Promix for the whole process?

I think most of the Fafard products have a starter fert in them. If they do, it may last you about 2 weeks or so

    Is this a fruit fly?

They are smaller than a housefly. Maybe half the size?

    Is this a fruit fly?

These flies are swarming my seedlings by a few hundred. It is rather annoying to have them swarm every time I water or go through the plants.

seeds When to plant germinated seeds?

You should plant them about 1/4 inch deep. Up to 1/2 inch would be ok too but no more. The soil should be damp but not soaking wet. I would say you should be showing some signs of life soon over the next few days.

media 3 sprouted in a Jiffy pellet. When to cull or seperate?

I would seperrate them when they begin to show the first set of true leaves. The root systems shouldn't be so developed to make getting them apart very difficult. Just work the soil slow and gently to loosen the roots. If left in the same plug too long the plants will begin to compete against...

organic implications of selling conventional as organic

I'm absolutely sure that what they are trying to do is wrong and underhanded. If, however, they see their error and correct it, that's one thing. But if they uncorrect it after I leave and do sell as organic or organic like, what problems could be headed my way legally? I don't need the few...

organic implications of selling conventional as organic

There is a local mom and pop garden center that wants to buy veggie seedlings from me. They are insistent on selling my plants as "organic" or "organic like" to which my response is no, you can't do that. I am not OMRI or USDA certified, not even close. I try to incorporate a lot of the...

    Pinching question

When a plant becomes root bound, it produces an auxin that tells the plant to produce flowers. Essentially, it thinks that this is all the farther I can grow, time to reproduce because I may die soon. When plants are flowering in pots, they are either root bound or have been given phosphorus as...

    Hello from South Carolina

Welcome from right around the "corner". It's nice to have someone else local to these parts. If you're interested later on, I have quite a few seedlings of different varieties that you can have. In a few weeks, they would be ready to go.

seeds Some seeds have come up. Now ?

If you have a very, very steady hand and precision scissors, you could snip the seed coat off the cotyledons allowing them to open. Basically you work your way around the edge of the seed just like cutting the crust of a PB&J sandwich. Be warned, there is no room for error. I do this with my...
