    Cover crops of alfalfa

I am very interested in this topic. I grew inoculated peas and fava beans recently. The peas slowly died from some kind of disease, but the favas were very robust and decomposed easily when I tilled it under. I was very pleased with the resulting nitrogen globs on the fava roots: Most of...

seed-train All aboard ( The next seed train)

Good to hear about the veggies working out for your son. I've never grown a papaya from seed myself, I commend you for giving it a try. I have some bad news about the Monster Infinity. It has perished... :violin: Between a neighborhood cat that decapitates peppers as I put them outside, and the...

    Kale Question

You are in for a treat, Kale is delicious. I've always grown it from seed, not sure how sensitive it is to having it's roots fondled. You could try dividing, but give it shade so it can recover. I grow pest traps like Nasturtiums nearby because bugs love Kale. Harvest the leaves from the bottom...

    overwintering Overwintering in Southern California?

I am near you in Placentia, and tried overwintering for the first time last year. I overwintered my plants outside in pots in a covered location. Some of the young ones died. I have also had a plant uncovered, unpruned, and in the ground survive just fine.

    vendor where else?

Adaptive Seeds grows out and selects plants that perform well in Oregon. The Maria Nagy seeds I purchased from them have been the most vigorous peppers I've grown this season. Highly recommended. Closer to your neck of the woods, fatallii.net has some cool stuff (get the Blondie seeds!)

media What potting soil should I use? Jiffy pellets -> ??

Maxsack, that's a cool mix. I haven't made a mix from scratch yet, but want to start playing around with chipped pine. HwyBill: My first pot-up I went from peat pellets to Kellogg Patio Plus with Pearlite added. Seemed to work good, when I potted up again, I added some some coco coir to the mix...

    organic Growing Organically

Your aphid story reminds me what I like so much about growing without chemical fertilizers and pesticides. I used to react to bugs by trying to find the right pesticide to fix the "problem." For me, a chemical gardening program was all about putting out fires. What's cool about organic/natural...
