Make sure the container is well draining and you will be fine. Brutes are expensive though, so I personally would feel weird drilling big holes all over them. For my money, I'd stick to fabric pots. But there's no reason it won't work.
I hear that a simple mix of properly ph'd peat moss and perlite by itself is a "soil-less" medium, and that you should treat it more like "hydro" in terms of using a lower-ph water.
It seems to me that the main difference between what I've just described and "soil" are amendments, namely humus...

+1, the amount of heat ultimately produced by an 400W LED light, HID light, incandescent light, or 400W heater for that matter, will all be the same. The energy stored chemically is practically negligible.
