seeds trusting seedling heat mat or not

That's the same mat I use - and with a tray and dome it stays about 81F inside. I get quick germination with most seeds. Be careful with any supplemental overhead lighting because that will raise the heat level significantly under a dome. IMO, anything over 85F is too hot. 75F to 85F is a...

    Cappy's Capsicum 2011

Hey Cappy, Great pics as usual - you're presentation efforts are unparalleled. How are those Yellow 7 Pods for heat and flavor? I've said it before, I think the Brain Strains are basically inedible except in the smallest sliver. I'm growing Yellow Scorpions for the 1st time this year and my...

The Sweetest Hot Pepper You've Ever Had

I'd vote for Fatalii - they have that initial pineapple tastiness before the heat kicks in. But they're certainly hotter than they are sweet. I've grown Hawaii Sweet Hots before and they are just OK IMO. Slightly more flavor than a Japone or Cayenne, but hardly sweet. I can send you some of...

    Flowers dropping and leaves curling

Geez, I hate to sound like a broken record, but would you guys stop with all this fertilizer BS. It's amazing that peppers ever found a way to grow before man came along with all these "Miracle" fertilizers. Just leave your plants alone besides giving them necessary water and they'll be fine...

What are the holes in my pods?

Stink Bugs were chewing mine last year. Once a hole got in the skin, the pepper would rot. Knock on wood, I haven't seen stink bugs around here since April. I wonder if the Agriculture Dept actually released those WASP's that were supposed to knock out sting bug eggs? Maybe they did and...

    Brian2112's Garden Update

Awesome looking plants! Your statement says it all on my feelings toward fertilizers. For peppers, use as little as possible, if any.

seeds Got my bulk Dorset Naga Seeds today I need to germinate now

Plant a few now to test the water - but you're better off growing outside next year. Start sowing Naga seeds mid-January indoors. I would think Maine has a short growing season. If you plant in containers, you can bring them in at night when a freeze is expected, and then put them out again...

    Bigglesworth's Family Snapshots

Beautiful garden! I'm doubting the black plastic will get the soil any hotter than black plastic containers do. I have mine sitting on asphalt to boot. I'm sure in times of extreme heat, it's not great for my plants - I just don't think you have the same problem with that giant heat sink of...

    Peppers touching the ground

If they show signs of rotting there, pick 'em. If not, let them stay as long as you can and just pick them 1st. My Cayennes are doing the same thing and don't seem to be hurt yet. I did pick one that was laying down and it had zero heat, still good food though.

My Jwala after 34 days in the garden

Looks healthy. If it's less than 12 inches, you might want to consider pinching those buds and let it grow for a few more weeks. You still have time.

Apartment garden war, (mercy, sweet mercy)

Ignore him and pay your rent early. If he mentions it again, say you'll bring him some tomatoes and chiles - and the growing season will soon be over. As a last resort, say pretty please and beg.

Growing chillies in a small apartment

It's not a matter of money - it's just that the Ferrari is a lot easier to crash, kapish? Miracle Grow especially if you get Moisture Control really holds water a long time, Pro-Mix does not. For a newbie who doesn't watch his plants daily, that can be a problem. And Pro-Mix requires added...

Growing chillies in a small apartment

Jeez, you guys want him to drive a Ferrari and he doesn't even know how to drive a Toyota. Best advice - buy some already started seedlings at the nursery or hardware store and put them in some Miracle Grow potting soil. Read how to transplant seedlings on Google - add water and sunlight and...

    Mini Orange Habs

IMO - pick all the pods off of it and it should grow. It's still early in the growing season. Maybe pinch any new pods for a few weeks and then let it rip. Not sure what soil it's in, but if it's in MG or something else with added nutes, just leave it alone. If it's had no nutes, maybe in a...

    synclinorium's Grow Log 2011

Very comprehensive grow log! I love the detail and anecdotes, not to mention the massive photo journey. Regarding Jalapenos: I usually pick them when they 1st start to crack or darken. But if you're going to save seeds, wait until red ripe stage.

    pics BigT Plant Pics 2011

Jeremy - Here's my best Giant Bhut plant now. It has good foliage and is starting to spread pretty wide. I may have to add branch support in the future. It has only one significant pod right now, but plenty more on the way. If the pods turn out like the ones you gave me, I'll be ecstatic.

    Josh's Plants & Pods 2011

Plants looking great Josh. Those raised beds will be a green jungle in another month. Do the Goat Pepper Cross pods have much heat? They look a bit like a stretched Savina. Nice work on the photos!

    pics BigT Plant Pics 2011

I planted 13 Giant Bhut seeds and all 13 came up and stayed healthy - good genetics there Jeremy! I gave some away and sold some on craigslist to try and recover my Pro-Mix expense. I have 5 left right now. They have been slow to make pods but I'm finally starting to see a few now. I'm...
