I'm no expert, but it looks to me as if the soil may be too wet.

Last year there was a thread on grafting pepper plants. One goal was to create a plant grafted with different branches from multiple pepper varieties in the hopes that this single plant would put out multiple kinds of peppers. Sounds intriguing to say the least.

Freezing won't hurt them at all. I know people who put them in the freezer for a few weeks because they feel it more closely models the natural freeze they get during the winter months in the wild.
I'm sorry I don't have the answer, but if you find out what's wrong please let us know. I have a habanero that is doing exactly the same thing. Except for the shape of the leaves, it looks identical to your plant.
